With the great reviews for One Night in Miami, a recurring topic came into my mind. What are the best debuts for actors turned directors?
For me, one always comes to mind. Gary Oldman’s Nil By Mouth (1997). It’s a rough movie to get through because of it’s content, but I think it’s great storytelling, with simple but effective direction. It features some amazing performances by Kathy Burke and Ray Winstone, both should’ve gotten more recognition. For those who don’t know the film, it follows a family in the projects of London. It touches on drug and alcohol abuse, and physical and emotional abuse. It’s very “a day in the life”, even if it happens in a longer period of time.

It would be in consideration, if it was her first film as a director.
Barbara Loden first had some small roles, then gave one of the greatest supporting performances ever in Splendor In The Grass and then directed Wanda, one of the best films of all time.
Haven’t seen it. Will definitely add it to the list. Thank you for the recommendation.

However, Welles has directed in other media before so that may be cheating. I’ll try to think of a straighter example.
