Great year for female leading performances. This would be my lineup for that year, in order of preference:
Isabelle Huppert – Story of Women
Glenn Close – Dangerous Liaisons
Gena Rowlands – Another Woman
Natasha Richardson – Patty Hearst
Christine Lati – Running On EmptyHonorable mentions
Jodie Foster – The Accused
Amanda Donohoe – The Lair of the White WormWhat about you? Post your lineup
ReplyApril 4, 2020 at 2:24 pm #120340998601. Meryl Streep in A Cry in the Dark
02. Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas in the Mist
03. Bette Midler in Beaches
04. Isabelle Huppert in Une Affaire de Femmes
05. Isabelle Adjani in Camille Claudel
While I really like my line-up and all five nominees, none of them feels like worthy to be #1. I think I must re-visit some of their movies. Or I could watch Patty Hearst – maybe Richardson will blow me out of the water.
When it comes to the Oscars: I’ve never cared much for Glenn Close and her big drama. I like Jodie Foster but in small doses – she’s great in The Silence of the Lambs, Demme knew how to restrain here but she is a bit too much for me in The Accused (but maybe I have to re-watch it). I love Working Girl, but was never too thrilled about Griffith (or Weaver), but I loved Cusack in it. I suppse, 1988 is the year where I go against all trends and opinions.
ReplyCopy URLApril 4, 2020 at 2:28 pm #1203409997I considered Sigourney for mine too. Is Camille Claudel good? I was about to watch it. Also, you should definitely watch Patty Hearst, Richardson is not the only good thing about it.
It’s been some time since I’ve seen CC but I remember it being very powerful (though long). I suppose most people have Adjani in their 1989 line-ups as that’s when Americans first got a chance to see it.

I deleted my post while trying to edit it lol.

April 4, 2020 at 7:00 pm #1203410232This is a really good year. One of the best for actresses. There was also Shirley MacLaine in Madame Souzatzka and Barbara Hershey in A World Apart.

I thought Hershey was good, nothing outstanding to include her in my list though. That Cannes was made for Richardson.

I’m planning to watch Madame soon!April 4, 2020 at 7:39 pm #1203410264This Oscar belonged to Glenn Close
Although it was a very very strong year, I agree. It’s her best role and she acted that flawless part beautifuly.

Do you think Genevieve Bujold was lead or supporting for Dead Ringers? And I can’t believe Susan Sarandon for her most iconic role isn’t there on your list?

It should have been her second consecutive win.

I didn’t watch any of those films. Dead Ringers looks interesting.
ReplyCopy URLApril 4, 2020 at 9:13 pm #1203410364Do you think Lahti is a lead role? River Phoenix was one of those teen performances that got put into supporting when he was the lead.
I’m sure people know this was the goofy year where the Golden Globes had a three way tie (Foster, Weaver and Shirley Maclaine.) So Streep and Lahti were the only losers. Lahti said at least it wasn’t a four way tie.
ReplyCopy URLApril 4, 2020 at 9:29 pm #1203410384River Phoenix is definitely the lead while you can make a case for Lahti in both categories. If I find someone better than her I’ll just move her to supporting lol.

You’ll be asking where’s her Oscar once it’s over. And please watch Bull Durham also, you’ll regret not having Sarandon in your final five.
