A race so competitive that unexpectedly became predictable very quickly when Winslet was snubbed for Revolutionary Road and placed in lead for The Reader. An excellent decision IMO. Who were your favorites that year? Did you think Winslet deserved it? What do you think would have happened if Winslet did get double-nominated that year? Who do you think came in second? Why do you think Hawkins and Scott-Thomas were snubbed?

If not Winslet then Melissa Leo should have won.December 28, 2017 at 6:04 am #1202450281
Leo and Ollie were the best in my opinion.December 28, 2017 at 6:20 am #1202450293
Kate Winslet – The Reader as Hanna Schmitzdouble-dagger
Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married as Kym Buchman
Angelina Jolie – Changeling as Christine Collins
Melissa Leo – Frozen River as Ray Eddy
Meryl Streep – Doubt as Sister Aloysius Beauvier

Good competitive list that year. Once Winslet was nominated in Lead and The Reader was nominated in other major categories, I knew Winslet would eventually win. Out of the nominees, I preferred Winslet to the rest of the nominees, although was slightly disappointed Cate Blanchett was not nominated for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (she would have been my choice). Out of the nominees, however, I would have ranked them:
JolieDecember 28, 2017 at 7:12 am #1202450308
Hathaway would be my choice for her exceptional work in “Rachel Getting Married.” Winslet winning for “The Reader” is wretched in every respect for one of her worst and most disgusting performances.December 28, 2017 at 7:33 am #1202450319
WinsletDecember 28, 2017 at 7:45 am #1202450326
If not Winslet it’s Streep. A SAG and a Critic’s choice is already enough for her to win.
Hands Down, Streep is my first that confronting scene is the best. Then Leo for Frozen River, Hathaway for my 3rd, Winslet for 4th and Jolie 5th.December 28, 2017 at 7:47 am #1202450327
Streep (Doubt)December 28, 2017 at 8:03 am #1202450336
Sally Hawkins would’ve been my choice had she been nominated (over Streep. I’ll let Jolie slide). Is this the I Loved You So Long year too?December 28, 2017 at 8:18 am #1202450342
Of the Oscar nominees…
Giving the boot to Streep, Jolie and Winslet…
1. Blanchett (Benjamin Button)
2. Scott Thomas (I’ve Loved You So Long)
5. Cruz (Elegy)

That’s what it says. Stop trolling.December 28, 2017 at 8:49 am #1202450361
I’m not trolling, I’m asking a question, why do you think it is disgusting? Don’t be rude.December 28, 2017 at 10:58 am #1202450462
There is an entire Internet of criticism on how “The Reader” appallingly conflates the sensitive issues of ephebophilia, illiteracy, and Nazism for a convenient and simplistic narrative. It’s not difficult to Google that. Winslet’s performance was at the center of the controversy, and shit like this shouldn’t win Oscars. It was also a topic of great debate on Goldderby way back when.
