Oh yes, Regina Hall was excellent. Diane was a contender this past year, though

yes, i use letterboxd years to complete my personal awards to make it easier lol. Diane had a festival premiere in 2018 so I have it in 2018.

I am not a fan of the Academy’s line-up. In fact, I am not particulary crazy about any of them. I really don’t know who would have gotten my vote as there is no passion for any performer. Colman I usually like, but she overdoes it in the movie (I cannot stand the director’s approach, so I suppose it’s his fault). Close I usually dislike but she was good here. McCarthy was fine but not really on my radar. The other two were disappointments after all the hype.

    Here’s my top 5:

    01. Marie Bäumer in 3 Tage in Quiberon [3 Days in Quiberon]

    02. Charlize Theron in Tully

    03. Julia Roberts in Ben is Back

    04. Regina Hall in Support the Girls

    05. Viola Davis in Widows

It turns out that the older I get, the more I enjoy restrained subtle performances. Ten years ago, when I was twenty, I would have gone crazy about Lady Gaga or Olivia Colman but today I am more impressed with somebody like Regina Hall in Support the Girls – who does not even have an Oscar clip in her movie.
