I don’t find her all that great in Us, but I’ll be okay with her getting a nomination so long as Alfre Woodard doesn’t get left out

    Joker Deserves Everything.

    Joaquin Phoenix is the Man

Cynthia Erivo should win best actress

Saoirse Ronan needs to give a good performance before voters start taking her seriously.

If Little Women is a  Best Picture nominee, which it most likely will be, then Saoirse is in. They’ll pick Saoirse on her worst day over Alfre, Lupita, Awkwafina, Cynthia and Julianne because Little Women will be in multiple above and below the line categories.

What’s with the Saoirse Ronan bashing? She was great in Brooklyn and Lady Bird. I know she’s not the flashiest actress, but imo she always delivers exactly the right amount of emotion and restraint. I haven’t seen Little Women, but I thought her monologue in the clip Sony released was excellent. Even if Jo turns out to be one of her weaker performances, I don’t think her addition into the lineup this year would be a poor choice at all.

What would those nominations be? Interesting that Julianne is the odd gal out.

I’m sorry, @VictorCruz, but I absolutely disagree with your opinion on ScarJo not doing anything of note in Marriage Story. After seeing the movie myself, I think she deserves a Best Actress nomination.

Picture, Lead Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Costumes, Production Design seem close to a lock. Directing, Supporting Actress are possibilities. Even if Little Women is left with 5 nominations, that’s four more nominations than Us, Clemency, Harriet and Gloria Bell will get, even if they happen to be nominated for their Lead Actresses. Generally speaking if you’re in a Best Picture nom and you have a great performance by a leading actress, then expect her to get nominated.

there’s nothing unfortunate with missing out on a nomination for a Lady Bird sequel.

yeah i don’t know about that. just because the film spends more time with Driver doesn’t mean she wasn’t a co-lead. putting in her in supporting would be category fraud.

ScarJo wouldn’t even be as bad of a case of category fraud as Vikander, Davis, and Mara imo. She’s deserving of a win and I thought she was on the road to doing so after the first 30 min but she doesn’t have nearly enough screentime or material to be competitive. She’s overshadowed through no fault of her own as what she put on screen was undeniable, but because Driver just had so much more to work with. She’s not winning unless they just love this movie to the moon and back, but she was still far better than Renee imo. That monologue in Nora’s office was a masterclass and she equaled Driver in the fight scene, I was left wanting like an hour’s worth more of material from her lmao

I actually find the recent backlash against Ronan amusing, I mean what’s not to like? At age 12 or 13 she was an Oscar nominee, she has proven versatile in different genres, can perform with different accents convincingly (unlike many of her peers), and most interestingly transitioned from child star into adult major success. Who was the last to do that, Christian Bale?

People are quick to dismiss her as she specialises in period novel adaptations (a bizarre criticism in itself), yet one of her recent Oscar nominations was an modern original character…so I guess people can’t accept that someone so young could be so talented?

    FYC:

Antonio Banderas and Asier Etxeandia, Dolor y Gloria (Best Actor/Supporting Actor)
Emily Beecham, Little Joe (Best Actress)
Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, The Good Liar (Best Actor/Actress)
