Gold Derby posted that Andra Day could be the 17th big-screen newcomer to land a Best Actress Oscar nomination. It’s cited that:

    – Shirley Booth (“Come Back, Little Sheba,” 1952)
    – Julie Andrews (“Mary Poppins,” 1964)
    – Barbra Streisand (“Funny Girl,” 1968)
    – Marlee Matlin (“Children of a Lesser God,” 1986)

Were all winners for acting debuts in film, it’s also noted that in this century, those nominees were also debut performances:

    – Keisha Castle-Hughes (“Whale Rider,” 2003)
    – Catalina Sandino Moreno (“Maria Full of Grace,” 2004)
    – Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious,” 2009)
    – Quvenzhane Wallis (“Beasts of the Southern Wild,” 2012)
    – Yalitza Aparicio (“Roma,” 2018)

So, we have 9. What are the other 7 debut performances nominated? I gather these performances:

    – Greer Garson (”Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” 1939)
Martha Scott (”Our Town,” 1940) – no credited performance prior?
    – Julie Harris (”The Member of the Wedding,” 1952)
    – Maggie McNamara (”The Moon is Blue,” 1953)
    – Elizabeth Hartman (”A Patch of Blue,” 1965)
Carrie Snodgress (”Diary of a Mad Housewife,” 1970) – uncredited performance at ”Easy Rider”in 69?
    – Janet Suzman (”Nicholas and Alexandra,” 1971)
    – Diana Ross (”Lady Sings the Blues,” 1972)
Bette Midler (”The Rose,” 1979) – does ”The Thorn” counts?
Whoopi Goldberg (”The Color Purple,” 1985) – does ”Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away” counts?
    – Emily Watson (“Breaking the Waves,“ 1996)

So, what are the 16 screen debuts that resulted in an Academy Award nomination?

I love love love Emily Watson in Breaking in the waves. I have seen the movie only once, and will never ever forget it. Such a heartbreaking, gigantic and beautiful performance. Made such an impact on me. I was in my teens when I watched it on the big screen.
