The bottom is, the industry does not view a leading role by a WOC as an Oscar-caliber performance, and that will be evident when/if Michelle Yeoh loses that Oscar for another boring Oscar bait performance by a white woman. And the one time they did, it was by a biracial woman – one with at least one white parent. The movie industry is the most transparent group of elitists.

And people here just need to stop using that “De Armas is a WOC” just to discredit the obvious. She can pass for white, and the fact that she’s playing a white American icon is enough to support that.

My point in bring up De Armas was exactly what you said that she’s passing and playing white characters. That doesn’t however diminish her race. I agree with everything you said above about the industry and as a person of color myself, who is a member of SAG and in the industry I see first hand the covert racism and bias, my point was Antonio Banderas and many others aren’t just white despite being passing and being privileged off of that and playing white roles. That’s all but yes the argument about the biases and racism in the industry is valid, but we can argue it without calling people who are of Latin heritage or biracial heritage “white.”

If you’re passing you’re white. Cant have it both ways anymore.

As for halle, she only won cuz Potier got that honorary oscar and denzel was winning so her winning was a nice little capper

The backlash she suffered after her win pissed me off.
But Halle has class. And she kicks ass since then. She’s terrific imo and as for the politics of her win, is this suppose to be some kind of anomaly??
I want her in the running as a serious contender for a second Oscar.

Her choices were off. Too many thrillers and action movies. After her Oscar, I think she was trying to be a movie star and forgot about the Oscars

Halle Berry beat a Todd Field lead actress(Sissy Spacek) for her historic win. Let’s hope history repeats itself with Michelle Yeoh!

The bottom is, the industry does not view a leading role by a WOC as an Oscar-caliber performance

Danielle and Viola did not do Oscar-worthy work this year. They gave solid, professional performances that were nonetheless stereotypical and unsurprising pieces of acting. The Best Actress lineup was better without them.

If a WOC gave a performance on the level of Streep in Sophie’s Choice, then they would be winning. No such performance existed this year, and it’s been hard for those performances to exist at all since there have been less opportunities for WOC, but that is changing. It is getting better. In the meantime, awards need to keep awarding what is considered objectively the best, art is not about quotas.

It’s really pathetic how people crusading for Danielle/Viola are ignoring Brian Tyree Henry’s nomination. If one of Danielle or Viola had been nominated, but not Brian, then it would have been the same number of black nominees and there would have been no outcry. Good job at minimizing one black actor for another.

Except Brian is in a category that notoriously supports a black person in a supporting role, so your point proves everything… that the industry does not support roles by black females (especially) if it’s not a supporting role. And I’d argue that De Armas’ performance in Blonde is not quite on the same level as Meryl’s Sophie Choice, but she’s nominated.

Jesus Christ. Jessica Chastain won last year for a Lifetime-type movie, Ana de Armas literally just got nominated for a PANNED film, a film that critics and public alike found OFFENSIVE.

But a Black actress needs to give the best performance of all time to win an Oscar? Give me a break.

And this is the point we’ve all been making, but I’m glad bigots/racists are finally stating it with their balls hanging.
