In the end, I could see Glenn losing and becoming the female Peter O’Toole… Hell, I bet people were saying the same thing when O’Toole was up for #7… Then he went on to lose for #8 too! (Why can’t we have another tie, please??)

I’m old enough to remember that race for number 8. Nobody thought Peter O’Toole was winning. He had already been given his Honorary Oscar at the time, and like his Best Actress counterpart that year in 2006 (Helen Mirren), Forest Whitaker was just winning everything in sight. The Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy at the Globes that year was Sascha Baron Cohen for Borat so he had already beaten all of his competitors for the Oscar at the Globes with the exception of a then little-known Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson who wasn’t nominated there. And then he beat every Oscar nominee at SAG and quite predictably. By the Oscars, the Best Actress and Best Actor awards were a coronation, not a competition.

As for number 7, you may be right. Somehow, Gandhi was just one of those things that became unstoppable even if people didn’t actually “like” the movie, they said they respected it. Plus, unlike Close, O’Toole lost the GG for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy for number 7 to Dustin Hoffman for Tootsie, and I think most people thought Hoffman would have been the winner if not for the Gandhi sweep.

“Glenn Close had a challenging role. She has never played this before. Why would she overreact while the character requires to be played in a subtle way? She is supposed to be an introvert. It’s great acting to be able to stay as subtle as she is while showing at the same time you’re burning inside.

Those critic praised her, some even mentioned it was a career best performance, they’re not wrong but, I still think she can’t top Dangerous Liaisons… that ending scene in front of the mirror should be shown to young ppl learning how to act. The Wife os worth watching.”

I have said I think being subtle, nuanced and not overacting are tough. Anyone can be big and over the top. Introverted characters require a lot more talent in my humble opinion because you need to convey so much without saying a word. That’s a masterful performance. You see her seething below the surface. It’s truly an incredible performance.

I disagree with the idea that any good or competent actress could have done what Colman did in The Favourite. She added so much to that role and her line-readings and delivery were the best of the year as far as I’m concerned. What Lathimos was able to capture in the close-ups from her were magic.

I would say what Colman did wasn’t that hard for any decent to good actress. Sure she has charisma but that’s not the performance of the decade.

The nice thing about opinions is that they’re never wrong. They’re just different.

I’m actually starting to wonder if this R Kelly scandal could impact Gaga, and that she won’t even be nominated.

Well the media is certainly helping to make sure that doesn’t happen with all the positive write ups they did for her. I don’t think it’ll make a difference but if it does have any impact, then I think it helps her. Gives her more publicity, a hurdle to overcome so when they give her an award (probably for Best Song), she’ll be met with a great “welcome back; we love you for surviving that” type of reception and she can use her speech at the Oscars to address the issue so it can go viral like Glenn Close’s GG’s speech did.

Olivia Colman can’t win. Can’t believe at this point there are people still thinking Close is loosing.

And I don’t see why. The fascination on this forum with Colman’s performance is a bit perplexing. The Favourite was my most anticipated film of the year…but it turned out to be a letdown. I was disappointed by both the film itself AND Colman’s performance. The day after I saw the film, I wrote in another thread that I would only nominate Weisz.

Gaga worked with RKelly like MANY, MANY, MAAAAANY people worked with RKelly. She did a song that wasn’t even a hit. So it’s not like we saw them hanging out, performing and getting nominated at every awards show. They performed it once and people barely remember it and the song itself.

People trying to blame Gaga for something everybody has done is bullshit, just because she’s in the middle of an awards race.

One misguided girl recording a song with him is very low on the list of things people did wrong in the R Kelly saga.

These campaigns are getting crazy desperate.

Anyway, moving on to a more interesting topic… So is Emily getting in for MPR instead of AQP or what?

I don’t really have anything to say re: Miss Blunt, but did our good friend Sasha delete her account again? I think I may have missed something while on holiday…

But, to stay on topic: would not be surprised to see Blunt snubbed again. Personal feelings aside, both projects are commercial fare with significant drawbacks (as is her MO). She needs some stupid, baity period piece to pick up a throwaway first nomination in Actress.
