Just watched The Wife. Glenn is so terrific. She has lots of moments and even if she didn’t say a word, just by looking at her eyes she truly intensifies. Jonathan Pryce was great too. I dunno why there was no mention about him!?

For some reason, she always seemed supporting me…

Because she’s supporting. This subject is so annoying. The movie is not about her. It’s about the family as a whole. And their survival. Blunt’s arch is almost nonexistent . She’s just there to be the matriarch of the family. To help and support them. She’s the mother figure. Millicent Simmonds could arguably be the Lead. Her arch is the biggest and drives some parts of the movie. She’s the essencial part to defeat the monsters. So STOP saying Blunt is lead or is comiting category fraud because she’s not. AQP is the definition of an ensemble movie.

Blunt is lead in AQP imo.She has the most screen time and I believe she’s the only one with solo scenes.

Millicent Simmonds also has solo scenes.

Don’t even make like she was a Bette Davis or a Meryl Streep. The role just fitted perfectly with her. Glenn is a better actress.

Jeez, calm down. Colman is one of the finest actors of her generation. I’m not gonna comment on Close being a better actress because Colman isn’t at a point in her career where she can be compared to Close or any of the above mentioned ladies. But I can compare their performances this year and Colman’s was without a doubt superior.

Just saw Nicole Kidman’s performance in Destroyer – it’s a ferocious best of career performance from her. I am truly puzzled as to why she hasn’t done better with the critics and in the precursors. She uses two different voices, a distinctive different walk, and she is in every single scene in this movie. The movie itself is much better than I thought it would be, a terrific debut from the director, great score, great editing, a great original screenplay (why no traction for it? it’s Oscar nomination worthy). is the film too hard-hitting for awards? Her Oscar moment scene for me was the one with her daughter in the diner, but she’s great in every scene. She would be a great fifth nominee (but so would lots of other actresses). Definitely worth seeing, she’s brilliant in this movie.

It is the director’s sixth film.

Thanks for the review! I need to see this as well. Just one thing. This isn’t director Karyn Kusama’s debut. This is her 5th feature film as a director. She also directed a short film prior to Girlfight (2000) and a segment in the anthology film XX. I remember reading an interview of hers years ago when I think her movie The Invitation was being released in 2015, where they wondered what happened to her career after her debut film Girlfight was a sensation at the festivals. She said it all got derailed after she did Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron and talked about the complications making that film and how it ended up deviating from what she and Theron imagined when they were planning it. After that movie bombed at the box office she was essentially not given any more opportunities from Hollywood. The article then talked about how female directors have to over perform to be given the same chances male directors get who can have bomb after bomb but still be hired by major studios.

Interesting of note, it took two years for her to secure financing for Girlfight because the main character was Latina rather than being a vehicle for a white actress. Funding still fell through before filming and indie director John Sayles came through with funding.

I have no clue! after watching I think I knew a lot of people would have issues with it not having a bow tied ending, and its pretty gritty. It has a female director and cinematographer, and Nicole really knocks it out of the park. we really should be talking about her winning, let alone just being nominated.

Nicole has promoted the hell out of it though and with this and Boy Erased she has shown up to every event possible to promote, but people still aren’t voting.

Thanks for the info – not sure why I thought it was her debut. She does a superb job of direction, esp. the robbery scenes.

the question now is, do you think Blunt deserves a nomination for AQP?  (it doesn’t matter the category). That birth scene is everything already

FYC Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) for best actress

I think she should definitely be nominated. She’s my favourite supporting performance of the year alongside Rachel Weisz. The birth scene is out of this world and so is the part where she pricks her foot on the nail. That scene is also amazing. The amount of emotion she showed was incredible. And she didn’t need to scream and yet you felt everything she was feeling in that moment. She completely killed it in that role. I would love for her to win at SAG. And the more i think about it the more i think it is actually happening.

I’m also very keen to see Elizabeth Debicki in Widows. And i got a feeling that after i watch her performance she will be up there with Blunt and Weisz.

I, too, saw Destroyer on Monday and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, considering its negative reviews. I think part of why it hasn’t been received well is because it’s not a typical revenge tragedy, in that Kidman’s character isn’t someone we root for. She doesn’t always look for the love in the scene, which I think is the right call, given what the role is. The movie seems to be void of genre and, more importantly, void of any message. But I don’t think those two things are necessary in order to have a good movie. I think critics and voters seem to disagree; it’s too alien or different from what they’re accustomed to. That being said, Kidman’s performance is in my top five of the year and she should definitely have been in the conversation.

    1. Sakura Ando
    2. Glenn Close
    3. Toni Collette
    4. Nicole Kidman
    5. Olivia Colman

I have not seen McCarthy, Blunt (MPR), and Pike out of the other leading women from this year.

^ so true. also I saw it at AFI Fest where Nicole did a conversation before the movie, and the FEMALE interviewer said how she loved how masculine the character was. Nicole got so offended, and went on the defensive (everyone around me cringed at how awkward it was) and Nicole said actually she is very maternal because the story is about her doing right by her daughter.

I think a lot of people are just getting lost that a female lead in a crime thriller like this, can be this messy and unlikable. Having being acted by Nicole Kidman though does bring a sort of humanity to the character. I wish more people saw that.

I have yet to see A Private War but the trailer is mind-blowing. The voice? Crazy. I think she’s just about the best actress in the industry and, even though she has been quite successful (and I’m sure she measures her success in ways different than awards, as she should) she hasn’t gotten the acclaim that she really deserves.

I have seen A Private War. With a better distributor Rosamund Pike would be getting nominated in a cakewalk. God knows she deserves it. It’s one of her TOP3 best performances. Girl just can’t catch a break. She was fucked over last year and she’s fucked over this year. She should have already been a multiple golden dildo nominee with at least one win.

Hopefully Radioactive is amazing and Amazon goes all out for her next season. She deserves so much better than what she’s been getting, awards-wise.
