I think people are really being unfair towards Renée Zellweger. As someone who is being totally neutral to her, I really enjoyed her performance. After watching all leads’ performances, I thought Renée was the best and then came Scarlett. Charlize wasn’t as good as I expected. Anyway, Renée totally deserved an Oscar nomination for her role in Judy.

I never understood why and how Renée got an Oscar nomination for her role in Bridget Jones’ diary. However, her Oscar nomination for Chicago was well deserved. She was amazing in that film. I can’t comment on Cold Mountain since I haven’t seen it. However, it’s pointless to bring up her Bridget Jones’ diary nomination to say that her performance in Judy isn’t Oscar worthy. Why is it fair to degrade her for Bridget Jones’ Diary when it’s unfair to degrade J.Lo for her previous filmography? We are talking about the best performances of 2019 here so who cares about Bridget Jones or J.Lo’s previous roles? Can’t people be better performers years later? Is it really fair to bring up their failures all the time? If someone had failures in the past, does it mean they can never have a success?

Also, what’s the point of talking about Renée’s break? Actresses and actors are allowed to take breaks to clear their mind and soul. Then, they are allowed to act again. Moreover, they are allowed to make an awesome comeback with remarkable performances. Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio also took a break and then he came back with an Oscar nomination. Why couldn’t Oscar winner Renée take a break and return with an Oscar nomination?

Actors and actresses should be criticized for their current roles. Not because of their previous unsuccessful works, previous undeserved nominations, and taking time out. Not everyone has to like or appreciate each nominee’s performance, but at least anyone can state facts about only actors/actresses’ performance.

I enjoyed Renée’s performance and she’s definitely very worthy of a win. I really don’t mind her winning. I just wanted someone other than her to win one of the precursors so the race ain’t that boring. At this point I think she’s sweeping.

I’m pretty sure most people who do not want renee to win (at least before the sweep kicked in) are saying so on the grounds of the performance she gave in judy and nothing else, least of all bridget jones, or any of her rom-com turns. maybe it’s just your personal dislike for that film and her performance in it that’s led to this judgment, I for one thought her delivery was pitch-perfect

    I mean come on

I agree – I adore her in Bridget Jones. It’s probably my favorite romantic comedy of all time. But personally, I find her performance in Judy to be lackluster. I appreciate that she sings (unlike some recent actors we know), but unfortunately her wispy/sultry voice is nothing like the power of Judy Garland’s voice. It took me out of the film every time she sang. I just couldn’t buy that this version of Garland was selling out theaters every single night with that voice…

Of the nominees, I would award Scarlett, however I think the Academy missed out on nominating Lupita for Us and Florence Pugh for Midsommar.

Zellweger has it all locked up now as the Globes failed to honor an Oscar nominee. She’ll probably win at BAFTA too.

Of all of the adjectives I would use to define Renee’s performance as Judy Garland, “lackluster” would be not be one.
Rather, I might describe it as, “transcendent”, “astonishing”, “mesmerizing”, “iconic”, “brilliant”,
    & “amazing”.
I might use the terms “tour de force” & “Oscar worthy” also.
Renee was in a league of her own this year, with no one even close.

I respectfully disagree, but I’m glad you appreciated the movie/performance. I felt her voice was much more suited to Roxie Hart and perferred her there.

If Renee wasn’t in the race, it would have probably been between Erivo and Johansson with Nyong’o or maybe more likely Awkwafina getting nominated.

How did we get to Part 16 on this thread? The Best Actress race was only exiting for a couple months and the rest of the season it was honestly pretty boring.

I think if you take the film’s premise at face value that these London concerts took place during the last months of Garland’s life where her lifelong drug abuse had compromised her vocal abilities, then it makes sense that you’re not hearing peak-Judy here. Renée probably practiced ten hours a day to sound like Judy at her absolute worst lol. It makes “sense” to me in that regard. And I totally believe that Garland could sell out venues at that late point in her life. Die-hard fanbases + legacy sentiment will do wonders for a singer’s catalogue well past a perceived artistic peak. Whitney could still sell out venues in her last comeback long past “peak-Whitney” until the end pretty much, and so did Garland.
