Here we go again. With this weekend being the release of Early Man, I feel it’s high time to speculate about the animated feature race this year. Who do you think will be nominated this year?

    BEST ANIMATED FEATURE PREDICTIONS (2-13-2018)
    – Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch
    – Early Man
    – Incredibles II
    – Isle of Dogs
    – Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2

May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows.

Early reviews for Isle of Dogs and Early Man are strong. Looks like we already have two strong contenders this year.

“Isle of Dogs” gets a PG-13 rating. Geez, I wonder if this will hinder its box office because kids can’t really see it like they could for other animated films this year.

Isle of Dogs, Incredibles 2, and Wreck-It-Ralph 2 are shoe-ins (unless Ralph sucks, which is highly unlikely), but what about the 2 other slots?

This year is a relatively weak year for animated film.

I feel like lately there is always at least one indie foreign film that gets in. What will be the “Breadwinner” of this year?

Tito and the Birds seems to me like the likeliest candidate so far. There’s also Big Fish and Begonia.

GKIDS is releasing “Mirai” this fall, from the director of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.” Wouldn’t be surprised if they worked their magic and got Mirai an Oscar nomination.

I’m surprised nobody is saying anything about EARLY MAN. Every film Nick Park has ever directed has been Oscar-nominated (except CHICKEN RUN, which was released before the AF category was created) and he has 4 statues himself. Plus, other Aardman films (PIRATES!, SHAUN THE SHEEP) also had no problem scoring nods.

Park is revered as a very old-school artist in the branch, and while EM is far from his best work story-wise, the technical craftsmanship (which we’ve seen time and time again is what the animators prioritize) is still exquisite.

Given that the Academy really isn’t crazy about animated sequels (none of the follow-ups to Oscar nominees NEMO, MONSTERS, or CARS scored nominations), the fact that the 2 big Disney films this year are sequels means either could easily not make the cut and shouldn’t be considered foregone conclusions. I think the only real lock is ISLE OF DOGS, but that won’t stop another stop-motion film from being in play.

As of right now, my predictions are:

    Incredibles 2
    Isle Of Dogs
    Mirai
    Ralph Breaks The Internet
    Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Isle, Incredibles, Ralph all look pretty set. I think Mirai will be a critics push, and then the last slot to me is between Spider-Man and Early Man. Spider-Man will probably be better reviewed and have solid box office compared to Early Man but I think there could still be somewhat of a bias against comic book branding, and could get Lego Movie’d.
