With a Casting Director at the head of the Academy, and BAFTA already announcing a Best Casting category, it’s surely only a matter of time before an Oscar for Best Casting is announced.

But which films would win this from years gone by?

Would it marry with Best Picture? Are the nominees copies of SAG Ensemble? Does it change any of our Best Picture winners of years gone by?

I’m fine with a casting award but only if it’s awarded to the casting director and not the ensemble

FYC Golden Globes- Fleabag, The Crown, Olivia Colman, Jennifer Aniston

FYC Oscars- Maggie Smith, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Adam Driver

FYC Emmys- Schitts Creek, The Crown, Years and Years

I think it would probably follow SAG Ensemble quite frequently, in fact I’d say for the last 5 years it would probably have been the same – Black Panther, Three Billboards, Hidden Figures, Spotlight and Birdman. Last year would’ve been interesting between Black Panther and The Favourite, though, and The Favourite could have edged it.

My personal picks for the last 5 years would be The Favourite, Lady Bird, Moonlight, Spotlight and Boyhood.

I hope they do make this an award, it could be another interesting element to the Best Picture race and I think casting directors deserve recognition, assuming they make the correct decision and award them instead of the cast itself.

The winners and nominees would have been the same for the most part, the same way Oscar acting winners usually match SAG, with its fair share of outliers

this said, SAG is shady and often makes weird decisions so..

I really doubt films like Captain Fantastic or even The Big Sick would have gotten a casting nomination so there would be some differences imo. Winners this decade would probably have been (in descending order): The Favourite, Three Billboards, Hidden Figures, Spotlight, Birdman, American Hustle, Les Misérables, The Help, The King’s Speech and Inglorious Bastards

FYC: Octavia Spencer (Luce) - Best Supporting Actress
