No cinematography thread has been made yet, so here we go.
American Society of Cinematographers have announced their nominees a few minutes ago. They are:
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY
THE TREE OF LIFEJanuary 11, 2012 at 8:34 am #51125
^^^I think all five will get Oscar noms too.January 11, 2012 at 8:58 am #51126
another nail in War Horse’s coffin – the cinematography is the one thing that most critics have praisedJanuary 11, 2012 at 9:06 am #51127
It will be a crime if Lubezki loses the Oscar again. “Tree Of Life” is spetacular in that department. The fact that he did something so beautiful using practically only natural light is something that simply can’t go unnoticed. The man deserves it. One of most artistic uses of lighting and camera work of the past few years.January 11, 2012 at 9:12 am #51128
I think my favorite nominee of the pack is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Love that it finally got something big.
That said, nothing beats Lubezki’s work. He has owned the precursor awards and with good reason.January 11, 2012 at 9:36 am #51129
Emmanuel Lubezki, for TREE OF LIFE.
The man is an artist.January 11, 2012 at 9:38 am #51130
I say that these are the Oscar five. Not a bad choice in the bunch. It will also be a win for Tree of Life, in my opinion.January 11, 2012 at 11:21 am #51131
Lubezki should’ve already won for ‘Children of Men’, but I’m damn near positive he’ll finally get his Oscar for his brilliant work in ‘The Tree of Life’.January 11, 2012 at 11:24 am #51132
I hope so. That’s one nom/win the Academy doesnt seem to mind giving to a Malick film.January 11, 2012 at 7:34 pm #51133
I think these are the 5 Oscar nominees too. Although Moneyball or War Horse could sneak in. Lubezki is one of the most overdue artists out there so I am really hoping he wins, but it worries me that the Acadamy at large might not like The Tree of Life and he ends up losing.January 11, 2012 at 7:40 pm #51134
My personal choice might be “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” but I think if I was an Oscar voter I would still vote for Lubezki for “Tree of Life” but also “Children of Men” and “A New World”. He should already have a few Oscars. I generally believe in voting for your top choice but last year I would have voted for Roger Deakins due to his career and I would do the same for Lubezki. They are two of the best working cinematographers and it is ridiculous that they are still Oscarless. I believe Oscart voters will at least rectify the Lubezki situation soon.January 11, 2012 at 7:42 pm #51135
I hope Melancholia gets in this category. The scenes at night, the blue and yellow tints, etc., are incredible.January 11, 2012 at 8:34 pm #51136
I believe the five Oscar nominees will match the Guild noms but think “War Horse” might replace “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. Might.January 11, 2012 at 11:34 pm #51137
I hope Melancholia gets in this category. The scenes at night, the blue and yellow tints, etc., are incredible.
Agreed. It’s my 2nd fave behind ‘ToL’/Lubezki.January 12, 2012 at 4:21 am #51138
I do believe WAR HORSE will replace TTSS…..
The winner should be an obvious TREE OF LIFE…
Spielberg go the message loud and clear through all the guilds
that he should not steal or pay homage…whatever he chooses to call it.
I cans ee WAR HORSE being nommed for 7 or 8 oscars and being shut out
at this point…
