In honor of this year Quvenzhane Wallis earning a nomination for her film debut, what are some of the best film debut performances in history?
Personally I think Wallis is way up there, she blew me away in Beasts and even though I know she’s not going to win, she’s my favorite in the category and would have my voteFebruary 13, 2013 at 3:00 pm #91037
Orson Welles/Citizen Kane
Not only his directorial debut, but also his acting debut. It’s going to be very hard to come up with any better (and some of the also-rans would also be from that film, which included mostly other first-timers). He was 25 when he played the role, convincingly playing a character who went from early 20s to 70s.
Tippi Hedren in The Birds belongs in the discussion.Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantFebruary 13, 2013 at 3:01 pm #91038
Wallis was pretty good in Beasts, so I’ll say her. Also, Justin Henry in Kramer vs. Kramer. His performance was pretty impressive for a debut performer. And he was only 8 years old!February 13, 2013 at 3:48 pm #91039
STREISAND funny girl
MIDLER the rose
kevin kline- sophie’s choice
welles- citizen kane
patty duke- the miracle worker
jane fonda- tall story
montgomery clift- the searchFebruary 13, 2013 at 4:15 pm #91040
Gabourey Sidibe–PreciousFebruary 13, 2013 at 4:31 pm #91041
AAO – great catch on Montgomery Clift, though I’d suggest him for Red River, which was made before The Search (the latter released first)
James Dean could be cited for East of Eden, although he had three uncredited bit roles a few years earlier.Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantFebruary 13, 2013 at 4:42 pm #91042
Damn, I didn’t know that that was Orson Welles’ acting debut. I’ll take him over Wallis and Henry any day.February 13, 2013 at 4:54 pm #91043
Hailee Steinfeld blew me away in True Grit. Not only one of the best child actor performances I’ve ever seen, but also one of the best debut performances.February 13, 2013 at 5:01 pm #91044
Here are some of my debut performances:
Gabourey Sidibe- Precious
Jennifer Hudson- Dreamgirls
Quvenzhane Wallis- Beasts of the Southern Wild
Sharon Warren- Ray (Robbed of an Oscar nomination)
Shareeka Epps- Half Nelson
Derek Luke- Antwone Fisher

For me, there’s no better motion picture debut performance than Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves. For younger actors, Linda Manz in Days of Heaven.February 13, 2013 at 5:53 pm #91046
Falconetti’s performance in The Passion of Joan of Arc is often cited as the greatest in the history of film. If so, that would make it the greatest debut as well as the greatest final one, since it was her only film.
For child actors, I’d throw in Jean-Pierre Leaud in The 400 BlowsFebruary 13, 2013 at 6:37 pm #91047
Heres my top 5 so far…
1. Falconetti (The Passion of Joan of Arc)
2. Orson Welles (Citizen Cane)
3. Diana Ross (The Lady Sings The Blues)Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantFebruary 13, 2013 at 7:21 pm #91048
Falconetti too! All of the greatest performances in film history are debut performances it seems like. I have never seen Falconetti’s performance, though. Is it good?February 13, 2013 at 7:25 pm #91049
…….missing Falconetti — it’s a difficult performance to describe because it’s so emotional, hypnotic/trance-like.
