It should be RYAN Coogler, Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee & Steve McQueen.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to have 4 out of 5 directors black!!!!

Substitute Cuaron for McQueen and add in Cooper and you got my lineup!

    Currently predicting…

    Damien Chazelle for First Man
Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born
Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk
    Yorgos Lanthimos for The Favourite
    Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman

I just don’t really buy Roma as a competitor outside of Foreign Language, but if I am proven wrong, I can definitely see Cuaron making the lineup as a beloved past winner for a passion project. I’m also not as confident as everyone else about Lee or BlacKkKlansman in general, but I feel like an overdue narrative may push him into the race. The director race also usually gets an under-the-radar contender in but that person doesn’t usually reveal themselves until later in the season, so it’s too soon to guess. Right now, the closest to that possibility would maybe be Peter Farrelly, but I gotta keep an eye out on the trajectory of Green Book right now. If Vice is great, McKay would be a pretty easy nominee to slide into this race, but I’m holding off until I hear about the film in general. Beyond that, the only other contenders that have a reasonable shot at a nomination are Coogler (won’t happen unless the film really lands with the Academy and gets Picture and Supporting Actor in the above-the-line categories), McQueen (if Widows becomes a mainstream hit/audience favorite and gains some buzz from the general public) and Heller (same as McQueen, but she has more of an uphill battle, but the push for a female director nomination on her side as well).

    1. Spike Lee, BlackKklansman
    2. Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite
    3. Steve McQueen, Widows
    4. Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
    5. Damien Chazelle, First Man

I also don’t buy Roma and Alfonso Cuaron as major players in the Picture/Director races–it’s definitely going to win Foreign Language Film (https://deadline.com/2018/09/netflix-roma-mexico-foreign-language-oscar-submission-1202464811/), and is a major contender for Original Screenplay and a possible spoiler for Actress, but my gut is telling me that’s it.

Someone I really expect to be nominated here is Lanthimos. His film is mainstream enough, not too auteurish and completely accessible, kind of funny, and yet as a foreign director he’ll still sound exotic enough to make it seem like a very cool choice.
