I think it might be Pedro in the fifth slot. The international voter demographic in the Directors branch has clout, the movie has acclaim, and it’s a deeply personal film based on his life experiences.

shhhhhhh…been trying to keep that a secret!

Darling, it should be Pedro. But it’s probably going to be Feminist Gerwig, because of what everybody knows.

Darlings, I feel really bad for Noah Baumbach. People really think Marriage Story directed itself?

The articles about blocking the fight scene were really interesting.

The irony is that Almodovar has done much much more for female representation on film than Gerwig ever will.

Darling, you just stated A FACT. Snubbing Almodovar and nominating Gerwig is the perfect example of fake feminism. Thatcher hopes the Academy surprises us and gives Almodovar what he deserves.

I have the same feeling that Almodovar is a strong contender for that 5th slot but that might be influenced by my personal bias since I 100% believe he should be in the lineup. It’s a beautiful film and he tells such an intimate, personal story in such a vivid, colourful way. It’s really masterful.

That being said, Gerwig, Baumbach, Waititi, Mangold and the Safdie Bros are right there too. And you know, we can only have one foreign language directed film in the race, eyeroll (I mean, seriously, Pain & Glory should be a contender in several categories but it feels like Hollywood quota can only handle one foreign pic and that love is going to Parasite (richly deserved IMO).

But right now, I’m sticking with Pedro to make it. C’mon directors branch.

Directors branch nominated Cold War alongside Roma last year. The new invites changed the makeup of the branch and much of the academy. Not out of the realm of possibility to have more than 1 international film anymore.

My bad! I remembered Cold War but forgot about Roma. Lol. Yes, the directors branch nominated two foreign films last year.

I didn’t think this would happen but I see it now as Tarantino being the alternative to Joon-ho.
    Bong Joon-ho
    Tarantino
    Scorsese.

After those 3 it’s a free for all.

I’m tempted to do something like this

    Bong
    Mendes
    Scorsese
    ——————
    4. Tarantino/Gerwig/Baumbach (Tarantino is the most snubbable of the top 4 if a snub were to happen. Gerwig is female representation and stands most to gain from one of the “safe” directors falling out. Not sure how willing this branch is to take heat again for sexism and her film is big. Baumbach is in major danger of being snubbed for subtlety so directors might go to bat for him).

    5. Safdie Bros, Mangold, Almodovar, or Waititi (The passion pick, we see it happen all the time. This branch loves surprising people almost as much as the Doc’s do. Not sure who it would be, but I think Waititi is least likely of the four.

    Yes Mendes is IN.

    Bong Joon-ho
    Tarantino
    Scorsese
    Mendes

The lady rep? Lulu Wang. A dreamer pick. But The Farewell has done better than Gerwig thus far. Won’t be long before we find out how her Christmas opening fares.

I don’t understand why Baumbach isn’t a lock for best director Oscar nomination. He really brought out some amazing performances from his “Marriage Story” cast – isn’t that a quality of good directing?

I’m of the same mind. He can make top 5. And so can several others….
    Very tough call this year.
