She is amazing in Safe. I love that movie but I truly don’t think it would be half as interesting if it wasn’t for her performance.

I’m still confused as to how Nicole Kidman won an Oscar for The Hours other than goodwill from the previous year and people feeling sorry for her with the whole Tom Cruise thing. I thought it was a pedestrian performance amidst histrionic ones from Streep and Moore.

Kidman was playing Virginia Woolf in a (sort of) transformative performance, and she had that dramatic scene on the train platform. That was what sealed her the win. Maybe the business with Tom Cruise boosted her narrative but it wasn’t the main factor I think.

Totally agree with you about Moore in Far from Heaven.

I kind of thought it was ridiculous that she had to wear a prosthetic nose in order for the performance to be “transformative”. She didn’t have to do that for any other performance. It’s not like Virginia Woolf was Cyrano De Bergerac whose nose had to be explicit that his “deformity” is part of the storytelling.

Diane Lane was the only one from the line up that came close to what Julianne Moore achieved in Far from Heaven. If Unfaithful had been much better she probably wouldve been my favorite but FFH is the definition of masterpiece.

I’ve never really understood the praise for Far from Heaven; to my eye, one of Haynes’ weaker efforts in a career of overpraised indie filmmaking, and that includes Moore’s fine-but-not-outstanding performance.

By far her best work is Maps to the Stars and Safe, as others have said. I also enjoy her in Maggie’s Plan and Short Cuts.

The Hours but then again everything is great except Still Alice.

Definitely Still Alice, especially with the way she transforms in the film to the point that by the end she can barely even speak. Far From heaven was really good too, but a little too subtle.

Julianne Moore turned 60 today so to celebrate (yeah I know, weird) I watched Maps to the Stars for the first time since its initial release. Movie kind of grew on me from before. Moore is sensational in one of her best performances which should’ve been her Oscar-contender in 2014, but we all know the Academy wouldn’t go anywhere near this movie.
