Considered as one of the greatest actresses of all time, Katharine Hepburn holds the record for most acting Oscar wins with 4. But what do you guys think is her best performance? I personally think her best is The Lion in Winter with The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby after it. Reply if your personal choice isn’t in the poll.

She was great in everything though – a thoroughly inventive actor who brought the dullest of scripts to life, and was unstoppable when the script was good, as was obviously the case with BUB.

Those two are my favorites along with ALICE ADAMS.

May 10, 2021 at 12:08 pm #1204249453I love her, her films are so much fun to watch, and she was a real MOVIE STAR, but I doubt many thespians think of her as “the greatest actress of all time.” As Dorothy Parker famously said of her: “Miss Hepburn ran the whole gamut of emotions—from A to B.”
I went with The Lion on Winter, but was so tempted to go with The Philadelphia Story. (The first time I recall seeing Anthony Hopkins was when he played her son, Richard the Lionheart, in 1968’s TLIW.)

I enjoyed her turn in Suddenly Last Summer and I think that she should have gone Supporting.

Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich are, fairly or not, generally considered to be great movie stars (with a limited register but a truckload of charisma) rather than great actors, but Katharine Hepburn is definitely thought of as a great actor by her peers. She had more Oscars by her fireplace than anyone else to this day, and when you Google greatest actresses of all time, her name will be a constant.

That’s true but I think most people agree that she doesn’t have much range.
“Hepburn is one of the most celebrated American actresses, but she has also been criticized for a lack of versatility. Her on-screen persona closely matched her own real personality, something Hepburn admitted herself. In 1991 she told a journalist, “I think I’m always the same. I had a very definite personality, and I liked material that showed that personality.” Playwright and author David Macaray has said, “Picture Katharine Hepburn in every movie she ever starred in, and ask yourself if she’s not playing, essentially, the same part over and over ….Icon or no icon, let’s not confuse a truly fascinating and unique woman with a superior actress.” Another repeated criticism is that her demeanor was too cold.” – Courtesy her Wikipedia page.
