Original Score is going to be a beast this year. Personally, I’m rooting for John Powell to get his long awaited Oscar and Alan Silvestri to get his first nomination.

    My Picks

    Alan Silvestri, Avengers: Endgame

John Powell, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (WINNER)

    Alexandre Desplat, Little Women

John Williams, Star Wars: Episode IX

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Woman In The Window

    Alternate

    Michael Abels, Us

TBA, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

    TBA, The Irishman

    TBA, End of Sentence

    Randy Newman, Toy Story 4

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

Silvestri has already been nominated twice: Best Original Score for Forrest Gump and Best Original Song for The Polar Express.

Is that the case? I was under the impression that he has never been nominated. Sorry about that.

    My predictions stand, though.

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

The only nomination I strongly see for US is score. I really want them to nominate Lupita and I’m sure they will but if I had to bet on which one I’m more sure about I would say score!

I think Star Wars Episode IX (John Williams), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (John Powell), and Little Women (Alexandre Desplat), are solid bets at this stage.

I’m hoping Us (Michael Abels) can manage a nod, and I’m hoping that movie does well with the Academy in general.

I’ve been seeing some people predict The Lion King (Hans Zimmer), but I’m not sure how that will go, especially if the score is basically the same as the original.

    My predictions:

    Harriet (Terrence Blanchard)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (John Powell)
    Little Women (Alexandre Desplat)
    Us (Michael Abels)
Star Wars: Episode IX (John Williams)

    Alts.
    1. The Woman in the Window (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross)
    2. Lucy in the Sky (Jeff Russo)
    3. Avengers: Endgame (Alan Silvestri)
    4. The Lion King (Hans Zimmer)
    5. 1917 (Thomas Newman)
    6. Cats (Andrew Lloyd Webber)
    7. Downtown Abbey

I’m 90% certain that The Lion King will be ineligible and virtually 100% certain that Cats will be ineligible, unless they bring back the “Adaptation or Treatment” Oscar.

Couldn’t find a Score thread, and GD doesn’t have odds on that category yet, but I wanted to start having this discussion and get people’s thougts. It’s interesting in a year with so many great films I’m struggling to find or notice the score in many of them. I saw FvF last night and heard good things about Marco Beltrami’s score out of the festivals but it really didn’t register for me. I feel the same way about Jojo. To be honest, I’ve really only appreciated the score in some of the horror/thrillers this year.

As for predictions, I think this bodes really well for Thomas Newman’s 1917 score which I’m sure will be very prominent. Randy Newman’s work in Marriage Story also didn’t really register for me, but I think the love for that movie is so great it’ll pull him through. Parasite’s percussive score is excellent and I think can pick up a nomination here. They don’t really go for horror/thriller scores at Oscar but given how thin the lineup feels I think Joker stands a good chance (although Joker could also be the surprising snub that we see in this category year after year). And then I love Us’ score and could see this being the place where that film is appreciated. Lastly, Desplat is the king of this category and it would be a mistake to leave Little Women out of this.

    Right now I’m predicting:

    1917
    Marriage Story
    Little Women
    Parasite
    Joker
    Alt: Ford v. Ferrari, Us

What are your thoughts? Have their been other films that you’ve seen that you think could show up here?

I’d definitely agree that Joker and Parasite are strong contenders, having heard both scores which are great. I haven’t seen 1917, but I’m pretty confident it’s locked down a nomination. Same with Little Women, because it’s Alexandre Desplat and I’ve heard a bit and it’s fantastic. Us had a great score, but I don’t think the movie has enough buzz to get anything on nominations day, pretty sure it’s going to vanish sometime before.

I’m gonna split my predicted shortlist into three categories. I don’t think Us or Ad Astra will be eligible so they aren’t included.

    Safe Bets
    1. 1917
    2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
    3. Little Women

    Next Up
    4. Joker
    5. Marriage Story
    6. Avengers: Endgame
    7. Parasite
    8. Ford v. Ferrari
    9. Jojo Rabbit
    10. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

    Other Contenders
    11. A Hidden Life
    12. Pain and Glory
    13. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    14. The Farewell
    15. The Aeronauts or The King

Randy Newman getting nominated for Marriage Story would be a letdown, not going to lie. His score was too syrupy, intrusive, and tonally obnoxious to fit with the maturity of the rest of that movie. I say this as someone who likes his other scores, especially his Pixar work.

This is the rare category that I want Joker to get nominated over Marriage Story.

    For Your Consideration:

    Best Picture: Parasite
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
    Best International Film: Parasite

This category is super wide open right now, which makes it really interesting to predict. I think you could make a case for all of my predicted nominees, but there’s one in particular I’m leaning toward.

    Alexander Desplat- Little Women

    Thomas Newman- 1917

John Williams- Star Wars Episode 9

    Hildur Guonadottir- Joker

    Randy Newman- Marriage Story

    For Your Consideration

    Best Picture: Parasite
    Best Director: Bong-Joon Ho,
    Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix
    Best Actress: Scarlett Johansson
    Supporting Actor: Al Pacino
    Supporting Actress: Laura Dern
    Adapted Screenplay: Jojo Rabbit
    Original Screenplay: Parasite
