my personal list

5. Marion Cotillard surprises in Best Actress

4. Monique wins supporting actress with little to no campaigning for Precious (one of the rare instance where the actual great performance won)

3. the Oscar correcting the history by giving Moonlight the best picture over Lalaland.

2. Charlize Theron for Best Actress (quite possibly the best acting performance that won in the last 20 years.

1. Of course, Parasite over 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women

Marcia Gay Harden for Pollock (okay it was sort of category fraud but that’s not really her fault)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – Original Score

Denzel Washington for Training Day 

Adrien Brody for The Pianist 

Talk to Her – Original Screenplay

Spirited Away – Animated Feature

Ex Machina – Visual Effects (probably a fluke win, but an inspired one all the same)

We had three great surprise wins in a row. Colman, Bong and Hopkins were all such inspired choices. The Parasite year in particular was just great. You literally couldn’t have scripted it better if you tried to.

Kate Winslet (I thought she was best in her category, and overall I’m so happy my fav won an Oscar)
Parasite (The best BP winner ever)
Bong Joon Ho (So deserving)
Olivia Colman (Surprising, yet refreshing)
Casey Affleck (Washington was awfully hammy, I’m glad they went with this subtle masterpiece of acting)

ROTK Clean Sweep was the greatest one.

In no particular order:

Hopkins win for The Father saved AMPAS credibility.

Gladiator and Russell Crowe – should have been Scott over Soderbergh too. Everyone still remembers Gladiator. We need epics in our Oscars

Heath Ledger (TDK)

Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)

Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) first director to win for sci fi I think. Sci fi has never won Picture yet, darn shame.
