I am thinking that if the Academy wants to evolve and become more international, I want them to create a category for best performance in a foreign language movie. This would be a category with both male and female performances
What do you guys think?
ReplyOctober 5, 2019 at 11:12 am #1203122671I have mixed feelings.
My initial thoughts are yes finally! But my gut tells me that this subtly marginalises the people and performances even further.
Btw do you mean a category for each Lead? Or one?

ReplyCopy URLOctober 5, 2019 at 4:04 pm #1203123094I’m conflicted. On one hand, this would mean great performances such as the ones in Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire would get recognised. On the other, it’s pushing them out of main categories. Antonio Banderas deserves a Best Actor nomination this year, but that wouldn’t happen under this system.

October 6, 2019 at 7:56 am #1203123857What if the Academy make a separate award giving body for International films where all films around the world will be recognized? Same categories as the Oscars but the nominees are non-English language films. Look at the Latin Grammys, Daytime Emmys, or Emmys for News & Docs? I know it’s a wishful thinking but would it be plausible?

That is such a great idea! They can have the Foreign Academy Awards the weekend before. They could also have all the movies been seen in all over the world in both January and February so the audience can see them before the awards. More like a festival kind of

Thanks. If ever that would be International Academy Awards or Academy Awards for International Films. I don’t know what will be the name but I hope AMPAS will find an effort for it especially now that they are recruiting international talents to join them.

October 7, 2019 at 7:22 am #1203125412It will never happen but it can be great to imagine it. For example 2011 line-up containted stronger Best Actor performances than actual Best Actor nominees.
Oscar – Best Actor
Demian Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
*Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Brad Pitt, MoneyballOscar – Best Foreign Language Film
