They (probably) won’t be nominated for Oscars this year, but they sure as hell deserve to be….
Can we use this thread as a reference for the performances in Foreign Language Films that ought to be (and would be were it not for Oscars bias) nominated for acting categories…
I’ll start with two performances that I think have been grossly neglected in our talks here –
BEST ACTOR – Javier Bardem, “The Good Boss” (easily would be nominated if they could muster a campaign and/or Oscars language bias didn’t exist)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Mehdi Bajestani, “Holy Spider” (could easily go lead, but I like the idea of campaigning him supporting to Ebrahimi’s lead)January 5, 2023 at 8:04 pm #1205222290
Best Actress- Tang Wei Decision to leaveJanuary 5, 2023 at 9:09 pm #1205222344
Tang Wei – “Decision to Leave”
Zar Amir Ebrahimi – “Holy Spider”
Vicky Krieps – “Corsage”
Léa Seydoux – “One Fine Morning”
Park Ji-min – “Return to Seoul”
Guslagie Malanda – “Saint Omer”
N. T. Rama Rao – “RRR”
Park Hae-il – “Decision to Leave”January 5, 2023 at 9:13 pm #1205222347This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.January 5, 2023 at 9:17 pm #1205222349
Ditto… And if the campaign had been Neon’s honestly she would be much more in the thick of it. Also… Best Actress – Anamaria Vartolomei, “Happening”
I still don’t get why was decision to leave was sold to mubi. It could’ve easily went to neon.January 5, 2023 at 9:20 pm #1205222353
Ricardo Darín – Argentina 1985January 5, 2023 at 9:27 pm #1205222355
Gustav De Waele, Close
Tang Wei, Decision To LeaveJanuary 5, 2023 at 9:48 pm #1205222363
Lots of love for “Decision to Leave” on here.
De Waele for “Close” really pops out. Haven’t had the opportunity to see it yet, but I’m excited to finally catch it.
I wouldn’t leave out
BEST ACTRESS – Maya Vanderbeque, “Playground” (again, if the Oscars spoke its language, could definitely see this playing well with the Academy)
Same with the entire cast of “Murina’s” supporting players – Danica Curcic (Supporting Actress), Leon Lucev & Cliff Curtis (Supporting Actor)January 5, 2023 at 10:30 pm #1205222387
Apart from the obvious DTL and Close ones, I’d like to throw in Park Ji-min and Oh Kwang-rok in Return to Seoul.
For Your Consideration:

- Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
- Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
- Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)

The cast of The Novelist’s Film and Joely Mbundu in Tori and Lokita are my standouts of this (weak) year. I also enjoyed Cecilia Rainero’s cameo in Trenque Lauquen, as well as Charlotte Gainsbourg in The Passengers of the Night and Elliott Crosset Hove in Godland. Not now
