With Silence Of The Lambs winning both Best Actor and Actress and The Exorcist being nominated for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, what do you think are the best performances ever on a horror film? are those the best?April 1, 2014 at 6:14 pm #149838
Max Schreck/Nosferatu (1922)
The ultimate Dracula, the definitive horror portrayalApril 1, 2014 at 6:23 pm #149839
Anthony Perkins in Psycho
Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion
Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon in Rosemary’s Baby
Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in Carrie
Must watch Nosferatu soon.
EDIT: How could I forget Christopher Lee in The Wicker Man? And a more underrated one, Philip Stone as Delbert Grady in The Shining. Chilling.April 1, 2014 at 6:24 pm #149840
Wanted to list come unconventional choices
– The children in The Conjuring
– The ladys of The Descent
– Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween (yeah, that’s right)
– Brian Cox in The Ring 2
– The high school students in Jeepers Creepers 2
– actors of Let Me InApril 1, 2014 at 6:46 pm #149841
O great thread!
Jeff Goldblum, in Cronenberg’s The Fly
Max Schrek and Klaus Kinski, Nosferatu. both so creepy
John Barrymore and Frederic March**, Dr Jeckel and Mr Hyde
The cast from the original Halloween
George C Scott, The Changeling
Nicole Kidman, The Others
Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, The 6th Sense
Lance Henrickson, Pumpkinhead
The cast from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
The cast from The Exorcist (so iconic)
The cast from Reanimator
So many others….
***ETA: probably my favorite, Bruce Campbell in The Evil Dead series.April 1, 2014 at 6:59 pm #149842
Christopher Walken, The Dead Zone (Oscar-worthy) and his co-star, the late great Colleen Dewhurst
The cast from Kathryn Bigelow’s, Near Dark: Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and most of the others
Both leads from both Let Me In and Let The Right One In
Boris Karloff, The Mummy (and everything else he starred in)
The cast from the original Fright Night
and so many others…….April 1, 2014 at 7:13 pm #149843
Margot Kidder – Black Christmas.April 1, 2014 at 7:54 pm #149844
Kathy Bates — Misery
Julianne Moore — Safe
Meryl Streep — Silkwood
Silkwood is not a conventional domestic docudrama. The situations are protagonist finds herself in are horrifying. The movie gave me the creeps while making me upset and sad by the end. Nuclear power is the scariest villain because its real.
Dianne Wiest — The Lost Boys
Gary Oldman and Sadie Frost — Bram Stoker’s DraculaApril 1, 2014 at 8:03 pm #149845
Best I’ve seen: Piper Laurie, Carrie
Most Underrated I’ve Seen: Neve Campbell, ScreamApril 1, 2014 at 8:31 pm #149846
I so agree with the mentioning of Neve Campbell in Scream. Such a fantastic performance that gets overshadowed by the genre for which it appears in.April 1, 2014 at 9:01 pm #149847
How could you forget Janet Leigh in Psycho and Jack Nicholson in The ShiningApril 1, 2014 at 10:26 pm #149848
I don’t think that either “Misery” or “The Silence of the Lambs” are horrors, so I’m not including them here.
Jamie Lee Curtis in “Halloween”
Janet Leigh in “Psycho”
Lorna Raver & Alison Lohman in “Drag Me To Hell”
JoBeth Williams & Heather O’Rourke in “Poltergeist”
Heather Langenkamp & Johnny Depp & Robert Englund in “A Nightmare on Elm Street”
Nicole Kidman in “The Others”
Natalie Jackson Mendoza in “The Descent”
The Cast of “The Devil Rejects”April 2, 2014 at 3:20 am #149849
And a more underrated one, Philip Stone as Delbert Grady in The Shining. Chilling.
THIS! Everytime I think of The Shining it’s the bathroom scene that first comes to mind. The silence between them and around them is terrifying. Peak Kubric directing and Philip Stone is so unsettling.
Not really an underrated one, but the Alien series really lives off of how brilliantly Sigourney Weaver conveys Ripley’s fear over and over again. There’s a genuine quality to her performances in all of the movies that is very, VERY hard to pull off, especially in a sci-fi / horror context.April 2, 2014 at 5:35 am #149850
Great topic…right up my alley! If you do not know, I actually run my own horror awards (http://www.frightmeterawards.com) that have allowed me the opportunity to interview and chat various horror actors/directorss. You can find the Facebook Fanpage as well and see pics of the likes of Tom Savini, Lin Shaye, Traci Lords proudly displaying their Fright Meter Award Trophies!
But to the topic…..agree with the ones mentioned above, particularly JoBeth Williams in “Poltergeist,” and Margot Kidder in “Black Christmas.” The other are obvious choices (Spacek, Laurie, Perkins, etc..)
Angela Bettis “May”
Gretchen Lodge “Lovely Molly”
Traci Lords “Excision”
Vincent D’Onofrio “Chained”
Isabelle Fuhrman “Orphan”
Patty McCormack “The Bad Seed”
Beatrice Dalle “Inside”
Marcia Gay Harden “The Mist”
MIchael Rooker “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”
Melissa Sue Anderson “Happy Birthday to Me”
Susan Tyrell “Night Warning”
Marilyn Burns “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”
John Jarrat “Wolf Creek”
Amy Steel “Friday the 13th Part II”
Sharni Vinson “You’re Next”
Karen Black “Trilogy of Terror”
I’m sure I can think of more, but these are ones that come to mind.
