Let’s discuss the nominees and snubs for Best Picture in 1981.

    The Academy selections were:

    Gandhi [WINNER]
    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    Missing
    Tootsie
    The Verdict

Do you agree with Gandhi’s win?

I was personally surprised by how much I enjoyed the film, and altho not the most memorable of those 5, it was the one I enjoyed the most, so I agree with the win. Honestly, this was a SOLID year, every nominee felt like a winner. My ranking:

    1. Gandhi
    2. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    3. Tootsie
    4. Missing
    5. The Verdict

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

I actually really dislike this lineup! Surprisingly dull to me. And I thoroughly hate Gandhi as a film (and a person lol).

I guess I would go with:
    The Verdict
    Missing
    E.T.
    Tootsie
    Gandhi

Once I give E.T. a more recent watch it may move up the list.

For me, TOOTSIE was my favorite film that year quite easily so I fully support its win.

I also would’ve nominated THE VERDICT.

I like E.T. and MISSING but they wouldn’t make my list.

GANDHI….sigh…I do think Kingsley was fantastic but the film was just too stuffy for my liking.

    So my ranking would be:

    1. TOOTSIE
    2. THE VERDICT
    3. E.T.
    4. MISSING
    5. GANDHI

    Personal lineup:
    Blade Runner
    The King of Comedy
    Sophie’s Choice
    Tootsie
    The Verdict

Gandhi was a good but very safe choice. I personally would’ve voted for E.T.

Tootsie is a classic. A Best Picture win would’ve also been deserving. But knowing today’s climate, that choice would be considered controversial 🙄

I personally find “Gandhi” quite boring. “Tootsie” is the only film to make my personal lineup, although I liked “The Verdict” and to a lesser degree “Missing”. “ET” was never a favorite not even as a kid although it has charm for sure.

    My ranking
    1. Tootsie
    2. The Verdict
    3. Missing
    4. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
    5. Gandhi

    My personal lineup
    1. Victor/Victoria
    2. Blade Runner
    3. Tootsie
    4. Poltergeist
    5. My Favorite Year

VICTOR/VICTORIA is my #6 though I sometimes alternate it as my #5 choice. POLTERGEIST, DINER, MY FAVORITE YEAR, and EATING RAOUL also fill out my top 10.
