Do the Right Thing was an instant classic. In retrospect it is even more of a classic.

The Academy got it right though, indeed, Crimes and Misdemeanors is vastly superior to all five. Ditto Do the Right Thing and When Harry Met Sally…

“Do the Right Thing” is the best of these films listed but my favorite films of 1989 were “Henry V” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors”. 1989 was actually a great year for movies but you couldn’t tell by the soft line-up. Out of the best picture nominees the only one that would make my top ten list would be “My Left Foot”.

None of these nominees should have made it in

    1. Driving Miss Daisy
    2. Born on the Fourth of July
    3. Dead Poets Society
    4. My Left Foot
    5. Field of Dreams

    A better lineup;

    1. Do the Right Thing
    2. When Harry Met Sally…
    3. Crimes and Misdemeanours
    4. The Fabulous Baker Boys
    5. Sex, Lies and Videotape

    1989

    1. Glory
    2. Road House (although nobody understood how great it was at the time, so I forgive the Academy)
    3. Dead Poet’s Society
    4. When Harry Met Sally
    5. Field of Dreams
    6. Black Rain
    7. The Abyss
    8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    9. Casualties of War
    10. The Dream Team (sue me, personal favorite)
    11. True Believer
    12. Lean on Me
    13. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
    14. Born on the 4th of July
    15. Parenthood

    The Academy got it right

Not a bad movie by any means, yet it’s just not “big” enough for best picture in my opinion. If Get Out or Lady Bird win this year, it will feel like the same…

Someone should have started a campaign called DO THE WRITE THING: WRITE-IN DO THE RIGHT THING.

    “Do the Right Thing”

Just about any damn film could have replaced “Field of Dreams” in the BP lineup.
