THR published this piece by controversial and outspoken feminist Camille Paglia who some accuse of being a regressive conservative and others think she’s just contrary says the Cooper-Gaga version of A Star is Born is the most misogynistic version:

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/camille-paglia-sexism-star-is-born-films-guest-column-1186741

What do you guys think? I don’t agree with Paglia often, but I think she brings up some interesting points.

I consider myself a feminist but she’s reaching. It’s told more from the male perspective because it was written, directed, produced, and acted by the male lead as his passion project, so obviously the focus is going to be more on him, it’s not sexism. They are most definitely co-leads (just because the focus is on him mostly does not mean she’s Supporting). And of course she’s going to find the Cooper and Kristofferson’s looks/performances the same because Cooper generally has long hair with a beard (maybe not that profound of a beard and say 1/2 inch less hair but still, the character is supposed to be a rock/country star). And the movie is a direct remake from the Streisand/Kristofferson one, not the others, so clearly there’s going to be similarities in both looks and performances.

“No user starts this shady” - someone culturally relevant.

Also got banned because...reasons? So, I guess ciao.

Roma and The Favourite are the only worthy nominees

I haven’t seen Roma but I take A Star is Born and Blakkklansman over The Favourite

    FYC:

Chromatica: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album.

Rain On Me: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video.

    Alice: Best Pop Solo Performance

I now think that Roma could possibly lose due to it not have a traditional release. That could be a reason why some will go against it. I want Roma to win, but a some might say that a film release mainly on streaming needs to be in the at the Emmys.

    I might switch to Greenbook.

I really think it’s The Favourite. Can’t wait for the pundits’ reactions when it’s announced as the winner. The meltdowns will be epic. And I say this: if it’s a sweep (Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design) then Lanthimos might upset Cuaron. Why not?

The most baffling prediction is THE FAVOURITE for Original Screenplay. The one aspect people find divisive in the film, and a majority suddenly think it’s winning Best Original Screenplay. The bias, just to not have to predict Green Book I guess.

They might as well go for FIRST REFORMED. Which I am predicting.

The Favourite is the only Original Screenplay Oscar nominee to win an industry award, and while it’s conceivable that that could also have lost to Eighth Grade at WGA had it been eligible, a PGA winner losing there to a script not nominated at the Oscars makes Green Book look weak. In fact, with the sole exception of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King no PGA winner that lost at WGA has ever won a Screenplay Oscar. The Favourite is by no means a slam dunk, but the stats suggest it to be the logical choice. And is it really that divisive? Even people who were lukewarm on the film as a whole I haven’t heard specifically complain about the script. Despite all this, I wouldn’t actually be all that shocked to see Paul Schrader win as he is the most renowned career-wise among the nominees; there could be industry sentiment for him that we’re underestimating.

Not sure if this connection has been made yet, but its funny how if Green Book wins Picture, it will probably win the exact same three awards as Moonlight (Picture, Screenplay, and Supporting Actor).

How ironic that a BP win that would showcase how old and outdated the Academy is could have the exact same wins as a BP winner that seemed to signify the exact opposite.

I think that AMPAS will get a backlash no matter what film win tomorrow. If, God forbid, something like Vice win they’ll be accused of doing political points voting for a legitimate bad movie and in doing so continuing the alienation of half of America. If the winner were Black Panther, Blackkklansman and Bohemian Rhapsody that win would likely be called undeserving. A Star Is Born win would reflect very badly about the state of cinema in America when the four remake of a story about show-business would be declare as the best film at the end of the second decade of the 21th century. The Favourite would also face criticism about the portrait of women in position of power as catfighters and lesbians. Roma, unquestionable the highest achievement in cinema this year is a film that not so many people has seen and would change cinema forever if the Academy embrace Netflix which really started when Casey Affleck won for an Amazon Studio film, Manchester By The Sea.

It is also a point of study that, if as expected Alfonso Cuaron win the Best Director prize, of the last 10 years only two american filmmakers has won the Oscar for Best Directing: Katheryn Biggelow and Damien Chazelle.

The Oscar needs to get rid of the preferential ballot so it can name a deserving movie as Best Picture again.

If Roma wins BP and Cuaron wins BD, both wins would be very historic. A director has never won for directing a foreign language film, and a foreign language film has never won Best Picture. Both wins would be a triumph for the art of filmmaking itself, and it would show that having a foreign language would not be a hindrance to winning either Best Picture or Best Director. Also, it would be a triumph for the streaming model (Netflix/Amazon/etc) because even a film that gets distributed through that method can go on to win Best Picture.

lol clayton davis is predicting that. That tells me to run in the opposite direction.

‘Roma’ was complete garbage as a movie…. it was legit like Curon went to Mexico on vacation and just filmed random scenes with a family he asked to film. Don’t get me wrong the directing, cinematography, and editing are great… but PICTURE? And those two actresses getting a nom? GTFO! and I cannot see in a million decades why it leads the “Best Picture” department. “A Star is Born”, is by far the best feature film in many years (IMHO), but there are so many better movies than ‘Roma’.

fuck sakes, “First Man”, was snubbed because of the flag controversy. Even in the ‘Original Score’ genre which I think it blew away all other scores.

Movies better than ‘Roma’ (As overall)

    -A Star is Born

    -Green Book

    -First Man

    -Blackkklansman

-Everything captured on a visual recording device.

‘ROMA’? The Mayans were a decade or so off (no pun intended)… the academy better give ‘A Star is Born’ and Cooper the Oscars it DESERVES BY FAR over a lot of these other films.

Let me already guess knowing the Academy. The fuckin dog from ‘Roma’ will be at the Oscars- just like back when ‘The Artist’ won.

If it does win, I’ll feel like Jackson Maine when he takes his hat off in the garage near the end of, “A Star is Born”.

Pathetic. The two actresses getting nominated as well just grinds OUR gears.

”The Favourite” will win Costume Design, Production Design, and maybe Hair and Makeup. That is it. No need to reply and argue. Just come back to this post tomorrow night after it wins those IF that.

BP will win Costume Design and Vice will win Hair and Makeup. The Favourite is also not a sure thing for Production Design as it could go to BP as well 😉
