To me the real missed opportunity was not nominating Elaine May for Small Time Crooks.

She was so marvelous! The first half of Small Time Crooks was so great! Then, the 2nd half went off in a totally different direction and almost ruined the movie ): Yes, Elaine May was terrific in it!

She’s the main sister, she is definitely the defacto lead. Plus she is the topped billed sister.

Both the book and film are told from the perspective of the boys, Lux never really has any scenes to herself (always with sisters, parents, Trip, etc), there are long stretches without her, she dies with time remaining, opens and closes with the boys so I mean.. imo she’s the main sister but she’s really not someone I would nominate alongside a clearly leading performance that year

I don’t think that it matters that the film is from the boys perspective. She has the biggest arch out of the sisters, to me she is a bit too large of a role for Supporting when you compare all the roles in the film.

Besides, Kathleen Turner was crimally robbed of a supporting Actress nod for this film.

For me, if they don’t have screen time, POV, or private moments with the camera, then they’re usually not lead. They can all be supporting roles in a large ensemble without promoting the one with an arc to lead. Her character sits better in the company of the Penny Lanes than the Erin Brockoviches this year. Just my take.

Not sure if it’s true or not, but I’ve also heard that some voters didn’t want Goldie and Kate to be the first mother and daughter winners.

Elaine May indeed absolutely should’ve been in there for Small Time Crooks.

Julia Walters for “Billy Elliot”. Her performance was pure wonder, subtle yet charismatic and unforgettable. One of the reason for me to rewatch “Billy Elliot” from time to time.

Marcia Gay Harden should have won in 2003 for “Mystic River” instead of Renee Zellweger.
