On paper, this looks like it was one of the most wide-opened races, with no clear winner until the Oscar envelope was finally opened.
Amy Ryan won most of the critic awards, including LA, NY, and Critics Choice
Cate Blanchett won the Golden Globe
Ruby Dee won the SAG
Tilda Swinton won BAFTA, and then eventually Oscar.
So, did the right person win? Who should’ve won? Any nominee you would have replaced? What the hell happened that year?January 4, 2018 at 10:34 pm #1202456348
1. Emily Mortimer (Lars and the Real Girl)
2. Joan Chen (Lust, Caution)
3. Saoirse Ronan (Atonement)
4. Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)
5. Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There)
6. Marie-Josee Croze (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
7. Catherine Keener (Into the Wild)
8. Ruby Dee (American Gangster)
9. Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild)
10. Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone)January 4, 2018 at 11:13 pm #1202456356
I’m fine with Swinton clenching the victory since the Academy ignores her due to her avant-garde choices.January 4, 2018 at 11:34 pm #1202456363
A better lineup
2. Schygulla (The Edge of Heaven)
3. Macdonald (No Country for Old Men)
5. Janney (Juno)January 5, 2018 at 12:14 am #1202456383
1. Tilda Swinton
2. Saoirse Ronan
3. Cate Blanchett
4. Amy Ryan
5. Ruby Dee
I would nominate Vanessa Redgrave over Dee. As far as extended cameos go, she was far more effective as older Briony.January 5, 2018 at 12:36 am #1202456390
Tilda Swinton. The Academy always goes right.January 5, 2018 at 3:41 am #1202456468
No one comes even close to her that year. Probably the most subtle the most understated performance I’ve ever seen. She was perfect.January 5, 2018 at 4:29 am #1202456509
I did like the Tilda Swinton win, but Amy Ryan was just as good.
Didn’t Tilda give her Oscar to her agent when accepting her award? KInda cool, I guess.January 5, 2018 at 4:54 am #1202456522

Amy Ryan, hands down. She tore my heart in two in Gone Baby Gone. With that being said, Tilda Swinton isn’t a bad winner. She was damn good in Michael Clayton.January 5, 2018 at 5:31 am #1202456541
I would have voted for Saoirse Ronan for Atonement but I thought Tilda Swinton was a superb choice (: All 5 performances were very good that year.
I loved Julie Depardieu in both A Secret and The Witnesses and Ludivine Sagnier in A Secret and Emmanuelle Beart in The Witnesses (o.k., I just love French cinema!!!!).January 5, 2018 at 6:04 am #1202456576
Amy Ryan. Thought she was perfect in Gone Baby Gone.
