I’m predicting Weisz now a la Rylance.

Smart thinking. The Oscar pundits will probably change to Weisz now.

Bigger role, better picture (in terms of awards recognition), and actually won an industry award.

    Why King?

She has a very brief role.

Her film is not up for Best Picture.

She did not score a BAFTA or SAG nomination. The only performance to accomplish that was Marcia Gay Harden.

She has won 29 awards, way more than anyone else. Her role is a supporting role and the category is Supporting Actress. She is wonderful in her role. She is well respected and has already won 3 Emmy awards. Within the last 3 years actresses have won this category without being in BP nominees (Alicia Vikander and Allison Janney). Actresses have won in the past when they haven’t been nominated for all of the precursors. Emily Blunt won SAG without an Oscar nomination, which is a really good signal that King can win the Oscar (as Adams, Weisz and Stone winning would have been a bad signal). So King can certainly win the Oscar. Again, Weisz gives a great (lead) performance, which is part of the reason I would prefer King. It’s not Weisz’s fault but I don’t think category fraud should be rewarded. I know it will be in Supporting Actor but again it’s not the performers fault (but I do wish they would be vocal about placing themselves in their correct categories!).

I am still predicting Regina King but I wouldn’t be unhappy at all if Rachel Weisz were to win. Interestingly when the winner is announced – if it is one of these two – we will have wait for their entire first name to be announced! (I still remember when Richard Burton bounced up thinking he had won and the winner actually was Richard Dreyfuss!).

That never happened. Go back and watch it again. When I interviewed Dreyfuss last year, he confirmed it didn’t happen.

Shelley Winters 2 Supporting Actress Oscars
Dianne Weist 2 Supporting Actress Oscars

    Notice a pattern here?
Rachel Weisz could certainly join them.

Critics’ don’t vote for Oscars, and neither do Golden Globe or Critics’ Choice. In Vikander and Janney’s cases, their lead performers Eddie Redmayne and Margot Robbie were both Oscar nominated. The only example of a Supporting Actress contender winning the Oscar after being excluded by BAFTA for a film they otherwise acknowledged was Melissa Leo for The Fighter and she won everything else that year so that was a fluke. It doesn’t matter that SAG went with a non-Oscar nominee they still chose not to nominate Regina King and they did see her film. Every Supporting Actress winner since 2000 has been nominated everywhere they need to be except Marcia Gay Harden, whose film had no visibility outside of Oscars. Oh, and Ed Harris was also nominated for the same film. Only 2000 and beyond matters because that’s the year BAFTA expanded to 5 nominees in every category and lined up to be before the Oscars.

I adored Rachel’s performance in “The Favourite” but after seeing Regina King in “If Beale Street Could Talk” I can’t see her losing because it truly is a supporting performance. The only thing that might trip her up is the Academy wanting to award “The Favourite” and this could be the category. But, I’m not betting against Regina King and her beautiful performance. p.s. I also won’t have a problem if anyone else wins, because I think every lady in this category gave a terrific performance. I just like Regina King the most.

This signifies my biggest problem with most of the people predicting Regina King. So many of them can’t say they’re predicting Regina without saying they want her to win, indicating there’s bias in their choice.

King doesn’t have industry support it seems. At least right now.

She really is likeable. But she doesn’t deserve it IMO.
She barely appears on screen, and the movie is like 2h.

Still predicting King. Whereas vote splitting wasn’t a problem for Weisz here I’m almost certain it will be at the Oscars.

Colman and Weisz both won their consolation prizes tonight.
