    1. Laura Dern, Marriage Story
    2. Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
    3. Florence Pugh, Little Women
    4. Margot Robbie, Bombshell
    5. Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell

Secretly hoping for: Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell and Nicole Kidman, Bombshell

I want JLo to get in but I don’t see it happening.

I love Laura Dern but this is too much. She did absolutely nothing in Marriage Story. If Glenn Close can go without an Oscar, so can Laura Dern. I’d love to see her win one day but this isn’t it. That is why I am not 100% sold on her winning as of yet.

    Shuzhen for the win.

    Dern is winning because

    – She’s the only way to reward Marriage Story. It looks like voters won’t care enough to give it an above-the-line award so Dern is perfect here

    – Similarities to the iconic Renata Klein

    – Another acclaimed performance in Little Women which only helps her case

    – She’s Hollywood royalty

    – Her parents are Hollywood royalty as well. Many of these voters are connected to Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd and will not hesitate to vote for their daughter

    – She’s been on fire the past few years and the Oscar will be the icing on the cake

    – There’s no alternative. Voters won’t forget Jlo’s mostly awful filmography (see Stallone)

The Dern machine has too much oil and juice to be stopped. She’s getting her career award because she paid her dues to Hollywood. Yall need to accept the inevitable

With Shuzen unfortunately missing sag, bafta, and gg and The Farewell not being a best picture front runner like Roma she is going to have to pray tomorrow. The thought of her and Pugh not being nominated is something I have come to terms with, but I’m still hoping they get in over Scarlett.

But I’m happy with Laura winning. She was my favorite part of Marriage Story so if that movie is going to win something at least it’s her

Just face it. This category hasn’t been about awarding the most compelling(because ‘best’ is relative) performance for years now. Dern will win because she fits the pattern of a hard-working actress with decades in the business who never won before and is in a buzzy film. She’s a lock for like, 6 months already.

If she does have a challenger, it’ll be Margot Robbie. She’d be double nominated this year, if Oscars allowed it. Plus Margot has been having just as good of a couple of years as Dern. Not to mention Oscars tend to reward younger, good looking actresses when they can (Jennifer Lawrence, Alicia Vikander, Emma Stone).

I’m still leaning towards Dern for the Oscar, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Robbie could win SAG at the very least.

with all that you’ve written, I’ll boldly say corruption is the reason she’s winning.

If anyone deserved a career win, it was Glenn Close, but she lost. Dern doesn’t have a very rich body of work and is only 52. She isn’t overdue with only two nominations at 52.

Robbie and especially Jlo deserve this. In an honest World, Dern won’t even be nominated

If Laura Dern wins (I’m 99% sure she will), the Academy would need to apologise to Glenn Close for ignoring her for a career win which most people supported and was even deserving because she’s given iconic performances before The Boring Wife. She even lost to a first timer in a supporting role.

Don’t put the blame on Dern, it’s the weak competition that will give her the Oscar.

there’s no weak competition here. JLo has the hype and critical support and her movie was a critical and commercial hit. Margot Robbie is praised too. It’s just the sheep mentality in play

JLo only has the hype from mainstream critics. The Oscar voters will not forget about her awful filmography. Matthew McConaughey played in a string of well received movies before he won, JLo has played in a string of garbage before Hustlers. She has no path to a win. Dern will easily win.
