The last time Lopez tried to act was 15 years ago in that Robert Redford movie that nobody liked. She never lived up to the promise that she showed in Selena. All she had before Hustlers was Selena and Out of Sight. She went after the money roles by playing in bad uninteresting rom-coms and terrible thrillers. Also it’s rumored that diva act isn’t for show. She shot her own chances in the foot. I don’t feel remotely sorry for her. She has tons of money and her good looks so she’ll be fine.

Yeah, but she will never hold an Oscar in her hands!! Hahahaha.

Jennifer Lopez was really good in Hustlers, but yeah, I can’t help thinking that if this Oscar thing means something to her, she should try to take on more prestige roles in the future.
She was very promising at the start of her career, but over the last twenty years she has been extremely disappointing. I mean she deserved a nomination for Hustlers, but I don’t think that it’s the world’s most unfair thing that she missed out this time. It’s a good lesson for her, that she has to work a bit more for the industry recognition!

The award is Best Supporting Actress, not “Best Career Choices.” Does “Asian” Scarlett Johansson have a pristine resume? Does anyone? Holding this against J-Lo is the complete opposite of what this award is supposed to be about and shows the Academy’s biases in full display.

Nobody said that an actor has to have a prestine resume. Just one that is better than JLO’s. Pretending that you just figured out that the Oscars are partly, at the very least, political is silly.

    Hello!

As I mentioned, she deserved to be nominated. But nevertheless, one has to be very naive to think that a good performance alone is everything. Many and many little things make up the whole thing. For example, a respected veteran like Oscar-winner Kathy Bates can receive a nomination as a lone nominee because she is loved by actors. On the other hand, Lopez doesn’t have much industry goodwill because she is considered a hobby actress rather than a serious, hard-working actress. So it’s harder for her to be nominated as a lone nominee. Also, Bates movie was a Clint Eastwood movie and the other one was about strippers. Magic Mike (and McConaughey) hasn’t gone too far either. This is a topic that is not taken seriously by the voters or favored over typical Oscar films, so you were right for calling it Academy bias.

Surprise, surprise!  The nominees are all white. #NoDiversity

Where’s the motivation for her though when she’s incredibly successful in music? Then again I guess Cher did it.

The problem with JLO is that she has been in so many bad movies for DECADES and given so many bad razzie performances that it’ll be hard for the Academy to take her seriously. This time the Academy took notice. If she wants to join the club she needs to keep at it like Matthew Mcconaughey

if anything this snub bodes well for when/if she decides to take on another prestige role, I’m neutral on her nomination, but her performance is better than at least two of the other nominees imo

No, it’s either about the performance in contention for the Oscar or it isn’t. You’re holding J-Lo’s resume against her in a way you’d never do for a man, and that’s bullshit.

I really don’t think her “snub” has anything to do with her previous film experience. Maybe a bit subconsciously–that’s unavoidable–but I don’t think it played even a minor role.

It’s Kathy Bates’ 4th nomination, Laura Dern’s 3rd, Scarlett Johansson’s 2nd (if you count Marriage Story as her first!), Florence Pugh’s 1st and Margot Robbie’s 2nd nomination. Kathy Bates is the only Oscar winner. Scarlett Johansson is a Tony winner. Laura Dern is an Emmy winner. Did I miss any (EGOT) wins or nominations?

Bates has two primetime Emmys for acting. Comedy Guest Actress and Movie or Limited Series Supporting Actress.

Jennifer Lopez snub reminded me of Jennifer Aniston’s one for Cake.
I think both were not taken seriously due to past bad filmography and tabloid image.
