Viola Davis’ role in Fences was a supporting role. There are a lot of times that she is in the background and does not have words.

If she were nominated in Lead Actress, then I would imagine the idiot voters would have still voted for Emma Stone.

I guess that theory went out the window with Frances McDormand vs Saoirse Ronan or Jessica Tandy over “hot” Michelle Pfeiffer. Hmmm….methinks I smell the stench of “the white gaze”. Viola winning in lead was possible.

She’s not suggesting Davis beating Stone is impossible just improbable were she not to sweep the season.

Davis also would’ve lost all of those critics awards to Huppert and Portman. She was initially scared to be in lead because of the raves Natalie was getting and made the decision, the right one, to go into supporting. Davis wouldn’t have won the guilds or many critics awards if she were in lead.

These threads are interesting…..theorizing Davis not taking guilds, critic awards or Oscar in leading. Yet…..ripping her apart for category fraud? And then to further drive the train to hypocrisy town….insisting her role was actually supporting???!!!! And then….the ongoing discussion about how her looks factor in hindering her??!!!I mean what is it? What it cements is her dilemma in her decision to go supporting or lead.

Wasn’t Davis virtually ignored by the big critics’ circles until the Broadcast Film Critics Association though? I remember they all went for Michelle Williams and the ones that didn’t went with the non-nominated Lily Gladstone that year. Outside of BFCA, the Critics also tend to award people based on categories they think they belong in rather than what the actor/studio is campaigning them for which can some times lead to inconsistencies (like when Patricia Arquette was winning all the Best Supporting Actress awards and then L.A. Critics named her Best Lead Actress for Boyhood), and most of them considered Davis supporting, so I guess that tells us how much people perceived Davis’ role in Fences.

ETA: I looked it up, and Davis did win some critics awards like from San Fran, Houston, Austin, St. Louis, Dallas, Detroit, Washington D.C. so I was wrong about that. It’s just Williams won the ones most people pay attention to and a lot of them and Gladstone got L.A. among the ones she won.

    Who wins supporting actress then?

The biggest victim of the movie who was forced to rock that Dora the Explorer haircut and project emotions without snots

My heart breaks for Williams 🙁

Hypothetically, if Stone were to have lost to Viola last year, would she have still gotten in this year? At the expense of who? (probably Margot)

No, she definitely wouldn’t have gotten in. September release, didn’t do anything at the box office, no real passion for the film. Whereas I, Tonya performed well at the box office, had the supporting actress winner, Margot was also a producer on the film and received stellar reviews.

Nah, her movie was a flop nobody cared about. Also she wasn’t nominated anywhere besides the Globes, as opposed to Dench (who made GG and SAG) or Chastain (who made BFCA and GG, and her movie got into PGA).

In a perfect world, Streep would’ve won #3 in 2009, Davis would’ve won in 2011, Portman or Huppert would have won in 2016, and Michelle Williams would have snagged the supporting trophy.

    I agree.
