Hi! I’m currently studying screenwriting at National cinematographic school here in Italy and I noticed that us men (not everyone) has a problem with female characters. Lemme explain myself better: it is like every time we try to write a woman we always end with a stereotyped character that has only one dimension. So I’m wondering, since I want to be a better writer and also avoid to be an asshole lol, what are the best written female characters of the last 10 years? I’m taking about round characters that are realistic, could be both Tv and movie and from any part of the world. Thanks 🙏🏻

Both older and younger incarnations were honest and vulnerable and also at their wits end. It was extremely relatable and honest look at motherhood from a perspective rarely discussed, let alone depicted in the culture.

Queen Anne (The Favourite)- played by Olivia Colman, written by Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara (tragic, veering on parody without teetering over)
Evelyn Wang (Everything Everywhere All At Once)- played by Michelle Yeoh, written by Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert (I don’t know whether to credit the writers here because it was originally for a man. somehow, it encapsulated the complexities of Asian immigrant women experiences)
Billi Wang (The Farewell)-played by Awkwafina, written by Lulu Wang
Cassie Thomas (Promising Young Woman) played by Carrie Mulligan, written by Emerald Fennell
Alike (Pariah)-played by Adepero Oduye, written by Dee Rees

TAR. I really liked TAR. At the beginning, TAR was written for a man. Usually, Women don’t play charming assholes or charismatic, dark and very complicated humans. TAR is a first for women. By the way, I think a great actor(Johnny Depp or Joaquin Phoenix or Michael Fassbender or Adam Driver) could have worked great as TAR too

I changed my mind a bit. I love TAR but it’s more about the perfect performance of Cate Blanchett. And it would have been the same with a great actor(Johnny Depp or Joaquin Phoenix or Michael Fassbender or Adam Driver). But the writing was off in some specific scenes
