If there were an oscar for best performance by an actor and actress (2 separate categories), 18 and under, who would’ve been the nominees and winners for the past couple of years?

I don’t think there’s any need for such category. There aren’t enough good performances in that age group to warrant  something like this.

There’s a Critics Choice Award category for that.

Bar some nominees, there aren’t usually performances here that are worthy of  something like an Oscar nomination. They might be good but not THAT good. Moreover, he’s talking about separate categories for males and females, which would be an even bigger mess. If there’s any category the Oscars should add, then they should be something like Casting or Stunt Co-ordination, not more acting categories. We already have enough of those.

The Oscars USED to have such a category. It was called the Academy Juvenile Award, a Special Honorary Academy Award bestowed by the AMPAS Board of Governors to recognize the achievements of actors under the age of eighteen.

The complete list of recipients are:

    • Peggy Ann Garner (1946)
    • Bobby Driscoll (1950)
    • Deanna Durbin (1939)
    • Judy Garland (1940)
    • Ivan Jandl (1949)
    • Claude Jarman Jr. (1947)
    • Hayley Mills (1961)
    • Margaret O’Brien (1945)
    • Mickey Rooney (1939)
    • Shirley Temple (1935)
    • Jon Whiteley (1955)
    • Vincent Winter (1955)

The Academy has no plan to resurrect the Juvenile award.

He’s talking about a competitive Oscar and not an Honorary one, so technically they DIDN’T USE to have a category like this. Moreover, it was voted on by special committees, rather than by the Academy membership as a whole, hence, they were not always presented on a consistent annual basis. 12 people were awarded over a span of 25 years, after which the category was discontinued. He’s talking about nominating 10 such people every year and awarding 2 of them, whether they are worthy or not. 250 nominees and 50 winners is a lot more than recognizing only 12 people over a span of 25 years. So, I don’t know how you can compare the two of them. It’s not to say that there aren’t worthy performances in this age group (most recently, Jacob Tremblay comes to mind for his performance in Room), just not enough to warrant two separate categories for them. As I already said, there are enough acting categories already. 30 acting nominees? No please! There’s no need to add more. Even though I think there’s no need for this either, considering Oscars’ bias towards comedic performances, adding such a category would be more logical than a Young  Actor and Actress one.

I would argue that there are not enough outstanding child performances to warrant this award in two separate categories. I don’t tend to follow child performances and would rather snub those who snuck in someone since none of the nominated child actors tend to wow me. If this was a legitimate award, Brooklyn Prince would have won this year for The Florida Project.

OP here, I don’t think this award is needed or should be introduced, I was just wondering which performances people thought would possibly make the cut. that’s all.
