Since we have already put him against Olivier and O’Toole (and won against those two) in the polls, then why not completing this ultimate trifecta with Daniel Day-Lewis???
So who’s a better/greater actor, Hopkins or Day-Lewis???

I can’t see Hopkins doing half of the roles DDL has done and pull it off.

April 25, 2021 at 8:44 am #1204221100Day-Lewis has a wider voice, accent and general character range, although Hopkins is far more naturalistic.
As someone above said, for most of Day-Lewis’ post 2000s work, you can feel the performer-y element in his work even though he is extremely method as an actor and wants to live and breathe his characters. Hopkins has a more classical feel as a performer, tends to find truth in his character from the people/things around him and his character’s personal circumstances rather than full on transforming into his character like DDL does.
DDL’s performances in the 20th Century were a lot like Hopkins’ in general in a lot of ways – more understated and naturalistic.
Depends on what you want really – both are among the greatest actors ever, and both give two of the greatest performances of the 21st Century (There Will Be Blood, The Father).
ReplyCopy URLApril 25, 2021 at 9:38 am #1204221245Hopkins. Because he is more natural, while Day Lewis has that vibe of “look how hard I’m acting”. Though Day Lewis in Gangs of New York is better than anything Hopkins has done.

ReplyCopy URLApril 25, 2021 at 11:00 am #1204221505DDL because he transforms like no other actor I have ever seen.
