Hi! I hope everyone’s doing well; I’ve been recently looking at past critic awards wins and am surprised at how many people have had a hefty sweep of the critics circle awards in one season (e.g. Youn Yuh-jung, Mo’Nique, Chloe Zhao, Lupita Nyong’o, etc.)

What are the biggest sweeps at the critics circles? What’s the biggest sweep in one season? And if you feel like answering, who do you think will have the biggest sweep at the critics circles this year?

I’m interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts!

    -Casey Affleck
-Regina King (I still can’t understand why)
    -Chloe Zhao

Those 3 are the ones i remember the most, they won almost everything, like a 90% (if not more) of their nominations

This year i think Will and Kristen could have that kind of sweep

Helen Mirren is the biggest one I can remember for The Queen, in spite of a very strong year for the category. Some of the very few nominations she didn’t win for that were across the pond in places like BIFA, Dublin, and London.

I’m pretty sure Cate Blanchett basically won everything for Blue Jasmine ? (including the precursors)

Casey Affleck won everything in existence except SAG

    Chloé Zhao last year.. STOMPED

My sister Regina deservingly won every critic award in existence which made the precursor snubs even weirder

Also Mo’Nique. I think the only “important” thing she lost was AACTA, otherwise the critics and precursors all went to her. As it should

    LAFCA too.

Don’t think I’ve seen a more dominant winner than Holly Hunter for The Piano. There were way less critics awards back then but the way she just won everything (quite literally everything) makes me think she’d be close to sweeping like no one else ever has with the current number of awards.

A Negroni. Sbagliato. With Prosecco in it.

On topic tho i remember Ethan Hawke sweeping everything for First Reformed.
When metacritic did that tallyboard of most awards won Ethan was so far ahead solely by critics and indie wins (since he wasnt nomd in ANY industry award lol) it was not even funny.

Best Director 2018 was also an Alfonso Cuarón/Roma show. His only true misstep was his runner-up placement at LAFCA

Campion makes the most sense as a sweeper this season. I think Kodi Smit McPhee will also do incredibly well.

Jennifer Hudson won nearly everything (along with every “Best Breakthrough”). The only majors she didn’t was LAFCA (runner up to Luminița Gheorghiu for The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Moartea domnului Lăzărescu) and NBR (Meryl Streep for Devil Wears Prada).

Funny how Goldderby is so unfond to Hudson’s Oscar win when almost every critic circle showered her with awards.

Michelle (Yeoh, Williams) Oscar campaign manager.

Her win gets a lot of criticism but people forget that her award run that year was damn near flawless

Jennifer Hudson only won NYFCC out of the trifecta, and she lost NBR as well. If I remember correctly she also lost a few regional critics, so I wouldn’t really consider her a critics sweep.

Helen Mirren (The Queen), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) and Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) are the biggest critics sweeps of recent memory that come to mind. Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) also won basically every critcs group except for LAFCA.

Ethan cleaning up was the first one I thought of. So glad that helped propel him to his rightful Oscar nomination oh, WAIT.

I’m certainly not still bitter about this. Certainly not.
