Reading all these ballots, I wonder are we underestimating The Shape of Water for Original Screenplay, in spite of its WGA loss?

I think you’re onto something Teridax. The ballot I just posted confirms your theory. It’s definitely one to watch out for. I’m worried for Get Out now.

I’ve wondered the same thing, it would make sense as a winner for screenplay if it’s taking picture as well. I’ve still got Get Out and Three Billboards ahead, but it’s probably ahead of Lady Bird at this point, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it won.

I wonder why there has only been one Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot from The Hollywood Reporter this year. It’s very disappointing, I love reading them during Oscar week.

I think it’s b/c of how late the voting was. But one would’ve thought that Scott would’ve had at least a couple to post in the last couple of days.

But the voting period is the same length as usual, isn’t it? A week? So does it matter if the voting started late?

I haven’t check, but I thought the voting usually ended a week before and then the following week the various trades start with their predictions and secret ballots.

im more surprised they didn’t make some up for clickbait traffic, since it’s anonymous in the first place lol.

Why people take so much consideration into this? First, it’s a very small number of people (which doesn’t make a difference) and second, the only one who was probably real was the first one and it was because there were some possible suspects (and it still was very disputable if it was an actual person).

If you’re talking about The Shape of Water screenplay theory, it’s not just based on THR ballots, it’s also based on the Gold Derby ones too. It seems like The Shape of Water could be a consensus pick, as those who are picking it for Best Picture mention that they loved the story. A few people on the message boards have argued it’s the best screenplay. I thought it was great so I’d be glad if it won. But ultimately you are right, these ballots are obviously an incredibly small representation of the likely votes.

What makes you think that the anonymous ballots aren’t real? I’m not saying it’s not possible that they’re made up but I really doubt it. Aren’t THR and Gold Derby very reputable sites?

It looks like the only race in acting is Supporting Actress. Metcalf has gotten literally half of the votes in all of these honest ballots. If this sample size reflects the voter pool to a degree we might have a race.

But this could be a fool’s hope as most voters are sheep.

I wasn’t talking about anything in particular because everything (even when they’re talking about frontrunners) sounds made up or in the same tone as people on these forums, or Indiewire’s or AwardsDaily’s. Also, being a reputable website does not mean anything if you’re quoting anonymous sources. Sasha’s “contacts” and “sources” sound at times more real than these ones (and you know all the crap that delusional dude likes to invent).
Come on @aahoto, I’ve seen what you post here. You’re smarter than this.

I personally interviewed six of the seven voters for Gold Derby. We would never ever fabricate something for a story, and I resent the implication. And although they are rival websites, neither would Hollywood Reporter, Indiewire, Entertainment Weekly or any of the others doing this. What would be the point? What would anybody have to gain? If caught it would be an immediate firing and possible implications from industry people we deal with every day.

The worst part is that this isn’t even as bad as like half the real blind ballots that cane out this year.
