I find these Indiewire ballots super confusing. They never explicitly tell you what this person picked, you have to parse through all the praise for each film to figure out what they ultimately went with.

not really a secret ballot but https://twitter.com/Lesdoggg/status/1225973159121346560?s=20

Welp I just finished voting for the Oscars. It didn’t take long cause there are no black people on it. So I voted for @CynthiaEriVo
and abstained from the rest of the voting. #moreblackpeopleplease

Didn’t voting end on Tuesday? She just voted yesterday per her tweet… Is that allowed? And how very sad she couldn’t include Parasite in her tunnel vision warped racism tirade. Every vote counts right? I really do despise some of these members. They have no idea how many would love to take their place and be fair and see all movies for a living

The real question is how is Leslie Jones an Academy member? I think she’s lying. On top of the fact that voting ended days ago.

I see so many switching to Parasite at the last minute after these anonymous ballots. I might switch too because the passion for the film is definitely there, but I’m very conflicted. I think Once Upon a Time also has a huge chance to win. It’s getting the support that I saw in Green Book last year. On the other hand, 1917 is getting the most #2 and #3 votes.

Parasite is outdoing 1917 by a pretty large margin on this tally

Amount of top 3 placements :

    Parasite : 18 including 14 #1s

    1917 : 9 including 1 #1

And it seems that neither is getting tanked though some of these ballots didn’t reveal where they ranked 1917 (while having Parasite on top). Was it #2 or was it #9 ? We don’t know

It’s obvious that tons of anti-Netflix voters ranked Roma at #8 in fear of having a Netflix film winning Best Picture which totally ruined the passion for it. The biggest director of all-time literally ran a smear campaign against it during the whole season

These ballots show passion for Parasite as well. Now let’s just see if a Foreign Language movie winning BP is too much for them or not

this is the big question. The foreign language barrier is HIGH. Yes it’s well-loved but man, I think people on this forum are setting themselves up for a Green Book-style disappointment when if it doesn’t win.

Ah, thanks for the nice data table. I guess I was wrong: it really didn’t seem like 1917 was doing that well on the leaked ballots.

I guess what matters most based on how the preferential ballot works is how many voters placed Parasite above 1917, or vice versa. Using this data table here’s what I found.

16 of the 26 ballots ranked Parasite above 1917.

6 of the 26 ballots ranked 1917 above Parasite

The other 4 are unknown. I would assume that the Tarantino crowd probably preferred 1917 while the Jojo/Irishman crowd preferred Parasite. In that case the score is Parasite 18, 1917 8.

Based on these ballots you can see there’s a pretty clear disparity. Parasite is preforming much better both in 1st Place votes and preferentially over 1917. Now it is just a sample of 30 out of 9,600, but this sure does feel like a good sign.

I think the big difference between Roma and Parasite is that the latter has an unprecedented passion behind it. Almost everyone is rooting REALLY HARD for the movie to win. It’s Crazy. People liked Roma a lot and were rooting for it as well but it doesn’t even compare to the love that Parasite has received.

I just wish the voters would reveal their WHOLE ranking. We have 8 ballots with Parasite at #1 but no info on 1917. I’ll just assume that it was #3/4 on all of them.

We don’t know how often voters have the pettiness of ranking dead last the nearest competitor of their favorite movie

MILD OUATIH AND PARASITE ENDING SPOILERS:

I’m such a petty bitch that if I would want Parasite to win, I’d put movies like Jojo, OUATIH, or 1917 at the bottom, for good measure. Or maybe not, because I don’t think I would have it in me to actually “lie” on a ballot and place movies that I liked less over others I liked more. I’d feel too guilty about it. Or maybe not. But it’s definitely an interesting strategy to have, if passion is your motivation and if you want to be strategic too. Wonder how many voting for Parasite #1 will actually do that. Those voting for Parasite at #1 SURELY know the hurdle it will have to surpass.

The order would be something like:

    1. Parasite
    2. Little Women
    3. Ford v Ferrari
    4. Marriage Story
    5. Joker
    6. The Irishman
    7. Jojo Rabbit
    8. OUATIH
    9. 1917

I wouldn’t be surprised with OUATIH winning either, to be honest. Not even Jojo. Been seeing a lot of love for them, although Jojo is more divisive. But what works in OUATIH’s favor is the rewriting of history, which makes it feel hopeful. It’s the kind of “What if?” ending that people eat up. I don’t think had it respected history, would the movie have had the same appeal. Voters most often prefer happy endings in favor of the more bleak ones, which is why I do feel worried about Parasite.

    Yes.

Y’all are crazy if you’re switching predictions because of anon ballots lmfao

I’m predicting Parasite for BP but it’s obvious that these journalists select the ballots that have interesting choices and not the frontrunner to create anticipation and sometimes that gives false hope.
