Can American Hustle sneak in this race? I know it seems unlikely, since it lost so much steam. It was the frontrunner for the first week of Oscar nominations, but it clearly plumeted after PGA honored 12 Years and Gravity. But it does seem that many Oscar voters love it and in such a tight race, it could pull through if there is a more lukewarm response to Gravity and if 12 Years is too harrowing for the Academy. I’m not betting on it, I’m still with 12 Years (I have yet to be convinced that voters love Gravity that much, yes, even with that preferential ballot, which could help Hustle more then Gravity ), but could A.H pull off a shocking upset?.
P.S: Hello everyone! I’m new around here but I love the Oscars as much as you all do and for the last 4 and a half years have been very active in the Oscar blogging world where felllow Oscar lover and gold derby member Fritz also has a blog. Check out my profile and blogs where I currently post on Film, Oscars, And More as well still retaining my retired blog Oscarfan. https://www.blogger.com/profile/01987519630654592530February 25, 2014 at 1:59 am #142997
Welcome Joe- Every time I see your avatar, I picture a gorgeous busty female responding so – you certainly allow for appealing posts.
At this point, I would say American Hustle will not win Best Picture. The surge for 12 Years a Slave seems too strong right now. I think Hustle will suffer the same fate Silver Linings Playbook did last year- lots of hype, lots of nominations – and then 1 win. In Hustle’s case, Jennifer Lawrence (sigh) has the best chance to me. Which really makes you wonder if the academy is just going to be lazy and name check Lawrence when ever she does a Russell film. Seriously, if she wins it will be, to me, the weakest Best Supporting Actress winner in over 30 years. It won’t hold well, and Lawrence will suffer from being rewarded enough- and if she does do a big role in the future, her odds to win would be smaller. Then again, who knows – it’s 4am and I’m babbling. No to American Hustle though- it would be a horrid win and Sasha Stone would be in the ER for the rest of the week (year).

well, I will say, now virtually nothing is a definite lock.
every movie nominated have the chance to win, with AH, 12YAS and Gravity being the main threat.
but of course, White Guilt : The Movie seems to have the better slight.February 25, 2014 at 7:12 am #142999
The case for an American Hustle upset, it seems to me, is that it might be an appealing choice to older voters who couldn’t take the violence of 12 Years and think Gravity is mainly a vfx spectacle. I’m not betting that there will be enough of those voters, but AMPAS’s membership is on the whole, older than the Guilds, and it may have a better shot here.February 25, 2014 at 8:07 am #143000
NopeFebruary 25, 2014 at 10:02 am #143001
I think it’s back in the race (although technically it never left). It had a good showing at BAFTA and it’s popping up in a lot of voter’s choices when asked. It was always very popular so…yeah I think it can.February 25, 2014 at 4:46 pm #143002
Could AH be the AMERICAN IN PARIS in this year’s race?February 25, 2014 at 6:02 pm #143003
I dont think AMERICAN HUSTLE will win best picture
but if Jennifer Lawrence wins supporting and David O. Russell
wins the original screenplay, its just as feasable that when they
open the envelope for Best Picture, American Hustle wins
3 key academy awards.!!February 25, 2014 at 7:37 pm #143004
It probably wont but certainly can. I dont think anyone other than 12 years, gravity and this has a chance. It actually has a huge chance of upsetting, they really loved it and are probably gonna give it a couple of “big” awards with lawerence and screenplay.
The question is, can Her beat this in screenplay. AH is the runner up but its a really close category.February 25, 2014 at 7:49 pm #143005
Absolutely.by no means are Gravity and 12 YAS the only contenders. The acting branch is huge and AH is littered with talent. I have !2 Years winnin but i personally am very nervous for it with AH on its heel . And if JLaw beats Lupita, it’ll look really gud as best supporting actress and BP seem to go together like peanut butter and jellyFebruary 25, 2014 at 8:49 pm #143006
It will be sad if this goes empty handed. I will be going back and forth on where I will predict it to win (as of now I have it going 0 lol). A film that did so well and is a favorite just has to get SOMETHING. Maybe a throwaway tech win?February 25, 2014 at 9:09 pm #143007
i’m more and more convinced that lawrence will win again, actually. i’m about to change my predictionFebruary 25, 2014 at 9:33 pm #143008
Oh hell, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!February 25, 2014 at 9:44 pm #143009
I detested American Hustle (which should have kept it’s original title American Bullshit) and am angry that I actually paid actual American currency to see it. 12 Years a Slave deserves the award in my opinion.February 25, 2014 at 9:44 pm #143010
I’m interested on Scottferguson’s take. Scott, do you think that AH will win an acting award? It will seem weird for it to go home WO an acting award, although it would be interesting if Cooper pulled off a huge upset over Leto.
