The story of Dune is quite dense which when adapted to the screen may leave voters cold and emotionally distant from it (just like BR 2049) which may result in a lack of passion for it. I just can’t see voters placing this high on their top ten list when other more friendly films are coming out. Again it could also be a tech contender that gets in based on its support below the line.

Now that ITH flopped, it’s one populist film less in the way for them to get in. They both probably won’t, but who knows what other contender will flop? Most haven’t been released anyway.

Will Venus and Earth collapse into one another? Maybe, but I wouldn’t like it.

The Academy already has two (or one) crowdpleaser to be nominated this year so i doubt that they will go for either of them

Dune is not an accessible story & Eternals is a MCU property. They’ll need overwhelming praise to get in. I personally don’t see it.

Eternals needs an overwhelming praise like Joker and i just can’t see it, Joker had a great trailer, Eternals not so much

I think so. For the sake of rating.

Eternals is going to get bigger critical praise than Joker (check its RT and Meta, they weren’t impressive) which was polarizing due to ridiculous “incel flick” controversy that neither audience nor AMPAS bought into. There was a conscious attempt to sabotage it and it failed spectacularly.  Eternals is a safe praise because it checks all boxes that critics now need to go easy on a movie: diverse cast, female director (who is also WoC so double points), female lead (also a WoC who is really a co-lead with a white guy but lets not nitpick), gay representation (there’s a kiss which will be easily removed in certian foreign markets but small steps and all that so lets not nitpick ). On top of that, Feige has already positioned this as his Oscar pony and critcs are trained enough to know when to pump the praise and when to hold back a bit so that the Feige’s chosen movie sits at the top.

Dune is based on a masterpiece novel like LOTR, is part 1 like FOTR, is sci fi like Avatar/D9/Inception/Gravity/Fury Road/The Martian just to name genre movies and 1-2-3 parters that AMPAS embraced, so talk about not being AMPAS thing can lay to rest. Doesn’t guarantee they’ll love it but they don’t love all movies that are supposedly their thing so that’s that. However, diversity in this case could backfire with white savior contoversy if someone wants to look or it. After all, the Messiah/Mahdi/Kwisatz Haderach is a white guy and his followers are diverse. But controversy didn’t take down Green Book so I’m not worried.

This is one of the reasons i don’t trust in critics anymore they’re just trained like you said to say nice things about a movie that looks like a complete borefest with force inclusion. But anyway,  i hope the trailer was misleading

With director such as Denis Villeneuve I will be shocked if Dune is not a major contender in a lot of crafts and a BP nomination.

Eternals is a big mystery for me.

Dune is being overestimated IMO. Hopefully I’m wrong because Villeneuve is a great filmmaker. Eternals ain’t happening. MCU has A LOT of detractors within the industry.
