Got the chance to watch a few of these recently (really weak lineup tbh) and was curious about what the consensus is around here and what your winners would be. I imagine you are all missing multiple films like me, but I doubt they become available anytime soon, so I’ll go ahead with some of them:
1. Memoria
2. France
3. Drive My Car
4. Titane
5. Benedetta
6. Ahed’s Knee
7. A Hero
8. The French Dispatch
9. Bergman Island
10. Annette
11. Compartment no. 6
12. The Worst Person in the World
13. Flag Day
14. Nitram

Of the films I haven’t seen, this is honestly the only one I am genuinely looking forward to, so it’s nice to see you liked it that much.
Did you get the chance to watch Vortex? Caught it on the big screen a few weeks ago and it still haunts me. I wish it had played in competition and won something.

I am admittedly a fan of Haroun’s, so your mileage may vary, of course. I don’t want to build your expectations too high haha. Well worth a watch, in my mind, even if you come out of it unimpressed in the end.
Not seen Vortex, unfortunately, but it’s high on my list for sure! The great gulf between the people who love it and, well, everyone else has me intrigued. Climax was a pleasant surprise a few years back, so looking forward to this follow-up.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 11, 2021 at 11:37 am #1204644295Oh, I’m not that big of a fan either, though my estimation of it keeps on growing with time. When I first saw it, I found myself a bit disappointed as well, I thought it just offered everything one can expect from the plot and I didn’t find its provocations all that entertaining. But ultimately, it stayed with me, as I found that the biggest provocation is perhaps leaving the viewer in doubt, questioning the politics around religion and how much of it is performance to you. Surely not the most inspired subject in 2021 but it’s a fine addition to Verhoeven’s feminist output, though it obviously doesn’t reach the heights of Showgirls or Elle. Like I said on my original post, this isn’t a very strong line-up and if I’m being honest I only love the first four films of my list.

It was the camp movie HoG wished to be (gratuitous I know…). No seriously, I thought it was funny as hell, Efira and Rampling were brilliant and again, I just loved how camp and grotesque it was.
