Audiard adds the Palme d’Or to the Grand Prize he won for A Prophet.

Dheepan? ThaThat’s very surprising. I only got 2 right. Best actor and grand prix jury, or something like that.

Got everything wrong except Best Actor and half of Best Actress (and then another half of it given the fact that I thought Cate Blanchett would never be left out).

For those interested, Dheepan is about a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior, who flees to France and ends up working as a care-taker just outside of Paris.

Every single film I predicted would win one award did so, just got them in the wrong categories! Dheepan I had tied for Jury Prize; Carol for Grand Prix; Son Of Saul for Palme; Chronic for Best Actor; The Measure of a Man for Best Screenplay; The Lobster for Jury Prize – correct; The Assassin for Best Director – correct.

    WINNERS:

    Palme d’Or
    DHEEPAN Directed by Jacques Audiard

    Grand Prix
SON OF SAUL Directed by Laszlo Nemes

    Jury Prize
THE LOBSTER Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

    Best Director
HOU HSIAO HSIEN for The Assassin

    Best Actor
VINCENT LINDON for The Measure Of a Man

    Best Actress
    ROONEY MARA for Carol

    Best Screenplay
    MICHEL FRANCO for Chronic

It wouldn’t seem right to end the festival without a reaction round up, so here it is for the reactions to the Palme d’Or win of Dheepan.

David Jenkins: Palme d’Or actually translates as “awful ending”, so…

Anna Smith: So the Palme D’Or goes to Dheepan, one of my personal favourites. Bravo jury!

Jason Solomons: Oh cool Jacques Audiard deserves it – about that French Renaissance then… I loved

Jonathan Romney: It was 80% a great film… and then it wasn’t. Va savoir.

    Dave Calhoun: Dhoh.

Robbie Collin: And the Palme d’Or goes to…Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan

Nick James: Yes, DHEEPAN wins the Palme. Crisp it was , deep and even it was not
Jessica Kiang: think this is time to trot out ‘s Pun d’Or winner: DHEEPAN won, but I thincRUST AND BONE was better. Jesus, you get on one plane and someone goes and awards the Palme d’Or wrong.

It is going to be hard for Cate Blanchett to win Best Actress when she is not even the best actress in her own movie.

Having Mara share the award with Bercot is almost a slap in the face, isn’t it? Can’t imagine Cate is pleased at all.

I just love the fact that no one thought Rooney could win without Cate.

Did Emmanuelle Bercot win for Mon Roi??? Hooray! I haven’t been watching livestream, I thought only Mara won? Oh, this makes me SO happy if it’s true!

I’m sure Cate Blanchett is pleased for her co-star, she’s very gracious about these things….

Cannes wins almost never translate to Oscar victories. That’s Awards 101 for Newbies.
