I think it’s time for this thread with all the announcements coming out lately.
So far, Annette has been announced as the opening film and The French Dispatch was also confirmed to premiere at the festival.

Looks like a blast. Think it was prepped for last year and Carax delayed. Hoping things go smoothly… somehow. Expecting The French Dispatch to (re?)land in comp, as well as Memoria (Weerasethakul) and Benedetta (Verhoeven).

Beat me to it!
If things go as planned, I think it’s a safe bet to be slated.

Verhoeven moved Benedetta a couple times precisely so it could go to Cannes so I think that one is a definite. Intrigued to know if the new Park Chan Wook will be ready.
Getting the feeling now it’s not the opener that French Dispatch might go out of competition.

I’m ready for a Showgirls return to form, hose me down with Holy Water!

Thierry Freumax confirmed that Benedetta will debut in Cannes.

LOL it was literally the most recent BP winner.
Also the Palme usually goes to films partially or entirely not in English, which usually don’t win the top prize at the Oscars – Parasite is of course an exception.
Off the top of my head only two Palme winners in the last decade have been entirely in English (I, Daniel Blake and Tree of Life, and the latter got a BP nom)

Cannes >>> Oscar, tbh
ReplyCopy URLApril 19, 2021 at 10:12 am #1204209425When is the list of films in competition going to be released? This ought to be coming right up if it’s in May this year – or are they postponing it a bit due to covid??? I am always most interested in the French language films debuting at Cannes!!!

Parasite literally just won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture.
ReplyCopy URLApril 19, 2021 at 10:59 am #1204209525I saw that the festival is going to be in July this year – is there a date when the announcement of the films in competition will be released??
