Rumours circulating about potential films playing (both in-and-out of competition) the film festival.
• “About Dry Grasses” (dir. Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
Reply
• “Asteroid City” (dir. Wes Anderson)
• “Barbie” (dir. Greta Gerwig)
• “How Do You Live?” (dir. Hayao Miyazaki)
• “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (dir. James Mangold)
• “Killers of the Flower Moon” (dir. Martin Scorsese)
• “La Favourite” (formerly known as “Jeanne du Barry”) (dir. Maïwenn)
• “Monster” (dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda)
• “Strange Way of Life” (dir. Pedro Almodóvar) (short film)March 1, 2023 at 1:04 pm #1205328032I wish Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest would premiere at Cannes. Rumor has it the film won’t be ready in time, but I think it’s the kind of project that would be well appreciated at Cannes. Sandra Hüller winning Best Actress would be great. Hopefully Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things and Karim Aïnouz’ Firebrand will show up too.

Not Oppenheimer?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 27, 2023 at 4:33 pm #1205366237New interview with Thierry Fremaux: https://variety.com/2023/film/global/cannes-thierry-fremaux-2023-festival-1235565156/. Much of it is about Cannes’ general missions and history, but he does talk a bit about what might be in this year’s selection.
-He confirms that they are in talks to show ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and that it’s important to him to have Scorsese show it at Cannes, especially as he hasn’t brought a film there since 1986.
-He said the new Almodovar won’t be the opening night film because it’s a short, but he doesn’t rule out it screening at a different time.
-He was non-committal about the prospect of ‘The Idol’ screening and just said he had only seen one episode but thought it was promising.
-He thinks the new Indiana Jones film is wonderful and would be delighted to show it.

Melanie Goodfellow from Deadline reported a few days ago that it was expected to be either April 13 or 20. I’ve read other sources mention mid-April as well, so it seems like a reasonable date. I could be wrong but it looks like Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (screened for A24 recently), Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon are some of the main players at Cannes this year. Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live, David Fincher’s The Killer, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, and Michael Mann’s Ferrari some of the main players at Venice. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things still undecided between Cannes and Venice.

So many conflicting reports about Oppenheimer that I gave up trying to predict anything. Last month it was almost certain to premiere at Cannes, earlier this month Variety said it was almost certain not to premiere there… I think an out-of-competition slot for Oppenheimer is still possible, but not likely.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Killers of the Flower Moon seem to be the big Hollywood movies opening there this year.March 27, 2023 at 10:24 pm #1205366729Hello everybody
I really thought Cannes darling Jacques Audiard would premiere his new film “Emilia Perez” on Cannes this year
But it looks like it has been delayed.

Babe, thanks for the heads up about Jonathan Glazer’s new project. Under the Skin is such an underrated masterpiece for me I can’t wait for his next movie!
