Nowadays it is always lead performers slumming in the supporting categories.
Can you think of cases where it went the other way?
The two that come to mind are Talia Shire in the first Rocky. (that was such a blunder, I think she would have walked away with a supporting award easily)
and
Courtney Love in The People Vs. Larry Flynt. She won some supporting stuff but then wanted to try for lead. I think she screwed herself out of a nomination.
(or do you not think those two are supporting performances? I haven’t seen those movies in a long time so I’m open to debate on that!)

Marlon Brando – The Godfather (he’s missing from BIG chunks of the movie; Al Pacino was the lead)
Frances McDormand – Fargo (she is the central female, but she doesn’t show up until half an hour in and it’s a short movie. Deserving win though)
David Niven for best actor in Seperate Tables….15 minutes and 38 seconds

Cliff Robertson? Really? I never saaw that. Does he have a small role? That was always an odd win to me to begin with. (It just got odder, how’d he win?)

[/quote]Scratch that- I got confused for some reason. I replaced him with David Niven, who was only on screen for 15 minutes in Separate Tables. (BTW I have no idea how Cliff Robertson won over Peter O’Toole in The Lion in Winter)
