If this works to fruition that team of Fincher and Robert Towne doesn’t get much better.

Yeah because Towne did such a great job with The Two Jakes…

This might be good, but I’m not too excited for it. There’s two main reasons why. The first is that I think another story focusing on Jake Gittes is missing the point of his character. Jake comes across as a deconstruction of the typical noir anti-hero in the original film. When we first see him, we get the feeling that he’s gonna be the hard boiled detective who’ll save the day, but by the end of the film, it’s clear that while Jake’s not incompetent, he was in way over his head. He’s a great character in the context of this story, but I’m worried that he won’t work in a prequel, as I fear that they’ll try to make him out to be more of a badass that he appears to be in Chinatown, but ultimately falls short of.

The other thing I’m worried about is casting. Jack Nicholson is one the greatest and most iconic actors of all time. So whoever they cast as the lead is gonna have some big shoes to fill, especially when you consider the fact that Chinatown is one of Jack’s most famous performances. I feel like whoever they cast will come across as a second rate Jack Nicholson.

However, I do like that Robert Towne is gonna be involved. I never saw the sequel, but if this story is gonna show Jake’s alluded to past, then the man who first hinted towards it should be there to make sure they get it right.

    Nobody’s perfect. He’s still a great writer.

There’s too many things that can go wrong. (fruition). But it still has a lot better potential than trying to team the likes of Whitty and Sandler. Glad you’re keeping an open mind. Healthier to review reservations too.

Good luck to anyone stepping into Jack’s role because that is going to be ripped apart even if he is good by people (Ex: what people did to Alden Ehrenreich even though he was equally as good as Ford in the role or Will Smith as the Genie in Aladdin)

He was though. I’m a huge SW fan and even I have to admit that Han Solo is the least difficult to play out of the main three humans (Luke, Leia, Han…..would include Vader in there but he only took off his mask in the third one so). He had the same swagger and acting skills as a young Harrison Ford.

That’s my biggest reservation. That could be an impossible thing to do

It’s not impossible….I mean James Bond comes to mind off the bat since people love some of them as much as the OG Sean Connery…..but thats a whole different genre.
In a way, I feel like whoever gets it will be ripped apart even if they are good since we had this the first time around and it’s hard to improve upon:

I hope so. David Fincher happens to be one of my favorite directors. I love what he does

He is hit or miss for me. Like I LOVED some of them (Zodiac being my favorite from him) and some not so much (Panic Room)

Watch anything he’s done in the last 30 years including the interminable “Ask the Dust.” Which was the last thing he did…almost 15 years ago.

I’m referring to Robert Towne who hasn’t written anything  decent in ages and whose Chinatown screenplay required Roman Polanski’s rewrite to make it the classic it is.
