Last week I watched “The Last Picture Show” again. Both Cloris and Ellen were fantastic in it. Both were nominated for the Supporting Actress Oscar with Cloris winning. Just wondering what people’s opinions are about the two. My vote would have gone to Cloris though Ellen was so good….it would be very very close. I think Cloris won the Oscar because she has the last scene & last line of the film. Thoughts?

Cloris really is powerful in that final scene where she yells “why am I always apologizing to you!” and talks about her depression.

One of the Best Best Supporting Actress performances ever.

Burstyn is fine but Leachman steals the film imo.

Cloris Leachman was devastating in that role. The epitome of a supporting performance that deserved to be awarded.

Both nail it perfectly and both have two of the most memorable scenes in the films – Leachman’s final scene and Burstyn reminiscing of Sam the Lion.

I give it to Leachman, Burstyn is a second, Eileen Brennan is third (who is not as powerful as her co-stars, but pretty fine).

I heard Burstyn say she had her choice of the three roles so it must have been odd for her when Leachman won the Oscar over her.
