This material has the potential to be “Before Sunrise”-level great. Bring it on.

^ If they had actually waited eight or nine years in between movies, sure. But they’re rushing it. Therefore, Chalamet will still be looking around fifteen years old despite the time jump, or they’ll have to rock silly make-up. And based off the details I read AIDS will very much be at the center of the story. It won’t just be set during that era.

I see no reason why not to explore the lives of the main characters as time goes by. Before Sunset trilogy comes to mind.

François Truffaut has made 5 films in Antoine Doinel series over the course of 20 years starting from The 400 Blows. I’ve read somewhere that Luca Guadagnino wants to do something in the same vein.

As for the AIDS epidemic, it would be odd for the sequel not to address it at all considering the time frame. It doesn’t have to be the main theme of course.

I don’t know about that. Chalamet filmed CMBYN when he was 20. He’ll probably be 23-24 when they film the sequel. When you compare photos of him on the red carpet to stills of CMBYN he looks really different to me.

I seem to be in the minority on this, but I’m excited. There are so few details now that I think it would be foolish to write it off already. I have trust in Luca haha

This sequel has a lot of potential and for the first time ever I actually trust Luca Guadagnino. Not objecting to anything.

I agree and I think for anyone who has read the book they would agree also . Elio does not have HIV in the book and I seriously doubt the screenplay would make that change.

So Elio cried in front of the fireplace for nothing?

No? That has nothing to do with this.

I agree this is unnecessary and will likely tarnish the original, which was perfect … i understand the desire to do a film series like before sunrise … but they should wait then .. and when doing it current characters they will then just turn it into a sad aid drama and its wont have the originality from the original.

Armie Hammer Confirms He’s Been Pitched the ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Sequel: ‘We’re All Gung-Ho About It’

However, Guadagnino was actively talking up the project over the past week, sharing details about a 1990-set plot against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis and following the former lovers around the world. He added that he planned to have Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer return to play their characters, allowing them to age in real time, similar to Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy.

As it turns out, the actors got the pitch, too. “Dude, he broke down the whole script for us,” Hammer told IndieWire during a brief conversation in Austin, where he was in town to be honored by the Texas Film Awards at the Austin Film Society’s annual fundraiser. “I mean, it’s not a finished script, but he’s got all the ideas for it. Luca’s all gung-ho about it, and by the way, if Luca’s doing it, I think we’re all gung-ho about it.”

Hammer said that while he expected to remain a major figure in the story, he would be willing to return for a supporting part, too. “You know, the experience of making the first one was so pure and beautiful that it wouldn’t matter how big my role was,” he said. “If the same people are involved, I’d do it all over again.”

I don’t think it’s a good idea but as long as Armie gets nominated for the Oscars then I’m good.
