Without the Golden Globes broadcast this year, there isn’t the usual question of what films will be nominated for Best Comedy or Musical. Curious what others think would have been in play for nomination. I see the following “top 10”:
Annette
Cruella
Cyrano
Don’t Look Up
Dear Evan Hansen
Everyone’s Talking About Jamie
The French Dispatch
In the Heights
Tick…tick…boom!
West Side StoryThen there are those films that stir debate whether they would be comedy or drama. Would that include?:
C’mon C’mon
CODA
Red Rocket
The StarlingSure there are others. Thoughts?
ReplySeptember 4, 2021 at 4:25 am #1204436077As of now, it’s hard to tell given that a number of these movies are sight unseen at this point. I imagine that the Globes likely would’ve come to bat for In the Heights. They’ve nominated musicals that were huge flops before such as The Producers, Nine, and Burlesque. Then again, all three of those were released in the fall, so they each had the advantage of being more fresh in peoples minds. So it’s hard to tell if the Hollywood Foreign Press would’ve gone all the way back to a box office flop from this past summer (despite all the rave reviews it received).

Such a stacked year especially for musicals, it’s sad (Globes corruption aside) these musical performances won’t get the recognition they might have in other years…

Anyone who’s seen West Side Story (whether it would be the 1961 film adaptation or any stage production) should know that their characters are both very much supporting.

There are so many examples of supporting roles frauded into that category even in recent years (due to supporting being stacked or whatever) I’m not even going to bother digging them up…

I don’t think Respect would qualify as a musical

Yes, but I doubt they’d want to have the performers playing Bernardo and Anita potentially pull votes away from the actual leads, Tony and Maria.

Oh I agree, I was just being theoretical in that would they really nominate Elgort at the moment due to his personal problems or choose a safe alternative to avoid negative press… this isn’t going to happen so just a theory. And yeah I just picked DeBose to be frauded as her character had more success in the past than Maria…

2. Has Aaron Sorkin ever written a comedy?

Care to elaborate? I genuinely want to know. Will there be a ceremony, will it be broadcast?
