August 8, 2022 at 2:40 pm #1205039264I haven’t seen the film since it was released, but I loathed Lawrence’s winning performance in SLP. That scene in the diner looks like the work of a first semester actor in a college theatre department that doesn’t require auditions. Just bad, and her director did her no favors.

Chill Wills nominantion is one of weirdests.
He is just there. He doesn’t do anything that singles him out.

Darling, re-watching her competition that year is just painful. Great performances all around gotten ignored in favor for some it-girl’s underwhelming performance.

Animatronic in Bohemian Tragedy (the most tragic Oscar win of the century)
Shouty Dern in Scenes from a Marriage cheap remake (Cheap Renata Klein)
Drag Donald Trump in Tammy Faye (even more over the top than the actual person she played)
Offensive McDormand in Three Shitboards (Fargo remake)
Disgusting Hawkins in The Shape of Water (her character was dumb and her mannerisms and tics were unsufferable)
Javier Brownface in Not Being the Ricardos (not a single word needed)
Abusive Father in King Richard (another unsufferable character whose mannerisms and voice work were weak as hell)
Poor Grandma in Hillbilly Elegy (hilarious that she got in)
There are a ton more but your Prime Minister is tired and needs to go to sleep. Take care, dear citizens.

– Alan Arkin in Argo, who was not bad, just… there… instead of Leo DiCaprio who missed it despite his towering turn as Calvin Candie in Django Unchained !

Talk about a performance I never thought I’d see mentioned here. Really? She was absolutely incredible in the movie and I would even go further and say she should’ve won out of the nominees. Easily one of her best performances to date imo.

So maybe I could change my opinion if I rewatch it.
But I never understood why Eva Marie Saint was nominated and won for that performance.
People always talk about coattail nomination. That one ranks as a coattail win in my opinion. She had the weakest performance of the main cast.

I guess it’s a divisive performance because I’ve seen lots of people similarly disliking it. I found the tone of her performance all over the place, and that monologue near the end is a prime example of why it doesn’t work for me. Of the nominees, I think Virginia Madsen should have won by a landslide.

Quite surprised to hear that tbh. Almost everyone I know who saw the movie, really liked her performance. Well, I guess it’s going to be one of those cases where we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I loved Madsen as well, she’s my 2nd pick of the nominees. But glad we both agree that Blanchett shouldn’t have won. I love her but that performance aged like milk.

I agree with all of these choices except for Portman in Closer. Major spillage though.
